300g Pata 7200rpm Drives?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have done a couple searches and looked at some manufacturers web sites and so far there is no indication of anything immanent over 250G at the 7200RPM mark for PATA. At one point it may have appeared as though Maxtor might have planned something over 250G, but no more.

Does anyone have any information of anything truly expected soon?

TIA!

Its a pretty fast drive... Data desity must help it alot... Ive never benchmarked them - just for use, it seems fairly responcive...

The largest 7200 rpm drives appear to be maxtor's or wd's 250 GB drive...

It would come as a surprise if the market

for "fast" huge HDD's where enough big

to make good business on...

Ofcourse once 500 GiBy can be be achieved

with a single platter there would be whether

we need it or not...

Unlikely to happen until someone with a 3-disk platform goes to 100 GB/platter, or unless Maxtor redesigns their 4-disk 5400 rpm platform for 7200 rpm (also unlikely).

When you increase the spin speed, it gets harder to pack the same amount of data into the same space. When you increase platter count, the same thing happens. That's what probably happened with Maxtor's 320 GB drive, hence they are selling just the 300 GB version.
