  1. I plan to buy a 2TB external hard drive and need some advice on which to choose. I found some for around £50-80 which were Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, Western Digital, Seagate I have done some research and it seems Hitachi are the best and Seagate the worst? But I thought I should ask the experts too.. What I really need to know is which brand is most reliable and what to look for in drives, aside from the lifespan of the warranty, I don't know much about the specifications other than the storage capacity, so any help would really be appreciated, Thank you for your time
  2. Z-NAND was originally hyped up to be a competitor to 3d XPoint and was said to be close to 3D XPoint in performance, although not as fast, but closer to NAND in pricing. On paper, the specs look quite impressive. Samsung says up to 750k IOPs in random read speeds and the other statistics are pretty competitive with a NVMe SSD. Are there any reviews or early previews?

  4. Hello, I have a 320gb SAMSUNG HDD that have no bad sectors (as results of several hdd test software) but fails at something close to 2 hours of use. I have Windows 10 running on my laptop with this HDD, and the simptons are as described below: 1. Suddenly, all open APPs freezes 2. I can't change between opened windows 3. The mouse point is able to move all around the screen, but anything that I click on will interact with me 4. If a music, video or movie is playing, it will just stop After a few minutes, the computer will reboot it self and the BIOS screen will prompt that there is no HDD connected. If I shut down the computer and turn on again, it will starts as always, and Windows will take like 5 minutes longer to boot, but no error message appears, it will behave like if a force shut down just happen. Any thoughts? Can I fix this? Thanks in advance!

  6. When I friend was looking for an SSD upgrade, I took advantage of it and sold my 'pedestrian' SATA SSD and replaced it with Samsung 950Pro connected via an adapter in a PCIEx16 slot. It took some wrangling but the drive is bootable on a Z87 board and is generally working fine. I ran some benchmark with Crystal DIsk Mark etc and they are more or less in line with reviews. However, when doing simple tasks, I'm not entirely impressed - for example I recently downloaded a zipped file - a compressed linux image. (650MB uncompressed) I wanted to unzip to the same folder and saw speed around 2-3MB/s, not exactly what I expected. The same goes for very small files - something that I'd expect to be instant. I check the activity monitor and CPU was hardly used, so clearly it is the SSD that's bottlenecking somehow? Finally I have 24GB RAM so I would expect Windows 10 to take advantage of that to cache recent files in RAM (such as the one I just downloaded)? Is there a way to investigate what's going on? I should probably add that while there is no radiator, the SSD is pretty well ventillated and running benchmark for longer indicates that there is no throttling even under have load for at least 10 minutes. The rest of the system: CPU i5 3.4GHz quad core 24GB DDR3 #1600Mhz c: - 256gb Samsung 950 Pro PCIE 3.0 x4 d: 4 way raid-0 - 4 x 500gb Sandisk Ultra II SATA SSD s: - 3TB backup HDD (nightly backups of d: and some folders on c: using CrashPlan - I temporarily turned it off, but no change) As you can see I have spare disks attached so I could create an image and perhaps reformat with a different stripe size perhaps?
  7. I've got a Samsung 850 EVO SSD (500G) on a windows 10 system. SSD is connected as non-boot drive for now Firmware is EMT01B6Q and Samsung Magician (4.9) fails when I try to update to EMT02B6Q. I've tried the Samsung Magician Secure Erase and it still fails. Is there another way to update the firmware, perhaps DOS based, like the Secure Erase? If I don't update will this cause problems with Windows 10?
  8. Hi, read your articles on the Micron M600 and Samsung Pro 850s....great work! As useful as the information was I am a bit more confused about which drives to get for our servers (looking at getting 2 SuperMicro's STX-NL with the LSI MegaRAID 12Gb/s controller with 1 gb cache). They will be VMWare ESXi servers. We are considering the M600 1TB vs the Samsung Pro 850 1TB. 16 1TB drives in a Raid 10. I am concerned about the M600's 1TB note of only a 400TB written and 219GB/day write span....seems kind of low? What is it for the Samsung Pro 1TB? I am also not sure about the difference between the v-NANDs and the NANDs and the SLCs and the MLCs, and all of that. Which one is better for a simple mix use (database/file/web servers on virtual machines)? Which actually does have a better lifespan and warranty? Thanks for your advice in advance.
  9. I am looking into Samsung 840/850 EVO SSD drives and Seagate Enterprise Capacity ST6000NM0044 drives, which feature hardware-based self-encryption via ATA password. I wonder whether or not Synology DS1815+ alike can take advantage of this feature?   10. Hello friends! Recenttly I've bougt an external USB 3.0 HDD - Samsung 3TB D3 Station (model: STSHX-D301TDB). This device has a 3TB Seagate ST3000DM001 (Barracuda 7200.14 series) inside. Because I don't need so much storage space on an external drive i want to swap the HDD inside with a 1TB from my desktop and install the 3TB drive inside my desktop, where it's needed and it's more secure. I found this step by step guide for the disassembly of the external drive, and i managed to remove the HDD from the plastic case without any damage to the case, so I still can reassemble the drive in case of waranty issues . So far so good, but after I installed the 3TB HDD inside my computer over SATA 3, I found that the System doesn't recognize the format on the drive and I get a notification that the dive is unformatted and I need to format the drive. And this is how it looks in Disk Management: It seems like there is a special formatting on the drive (I guess related to the 2.2+TB drive problem and GPT paritioning???) that it's SATA 3 to USB controller is also meant to understand and manage... but I don't have enough knowledge to understand what happens behind the scenes.... If I replace the HDD in it's case and use it's SATA 3 to USB 3.0 controller and connect it over usb, I get access to the entire storage space ~2,72TB, and I can see the data stored on it: My biggest concern is what would happen if I install a different HDD (1TB) in this external drive case? I don't want to lose data. Will that controller mess with the partitions of the smaller drive? It's not a problem to format the 3TB drive to use it in the desktop pc, because I havent't stored any data on it, besides it's 500MB of preloaded software. But will it be possible then to acces it using the sata to usb controller if i want to restore the drive back in it's original case?
  11. I've been looking online for various SSDs, and I was leaning in favor of the Micron MX100 (for obvious reasons - price:performance). Anyways, a quick check and I found something else of interest: Is this a good deal? It is somewhat more expensive but you get eMLC, and real power loss protection (the Micron drive is not complete enterprise level power loss protection). The seller claims that they are new drives as well.
  12. Can someone please help me with my issue. I am trying to migrate over 2 HDD to this new 1 TB Samsung EVO 840 SSD. The thing is programs and stuff are on 1 HDD and Windows 7 OS is on another HDD. How can I put them together on one SSD? My computer is currently setup like so- (C: ) - 1 TB HDD where programs are installed (D: ) - BluRay drive (E: ) - 2TB HDD for files (F: ) - 100GB HDD where Win 7 is installed / system (G: ) - 1TB HDD for files I would like to migrate my C: and F: drives into the one 1 TB SSD I bought. When using the migration software, I was only able to figure out how to migrate my C drive and not F as well. Can someone help me figure out how two migrate 2 HDD into 1 SSD? Ex: (C: ) - 1 TB SSD Win7 and programs (D: ) - BluRay drive (E: ) - 2TB HDD for files (F: ) - 100GB HDD for files (G: ) - 1TB HDD for files (H: ) - 1TB HDD for files email:
  13. I got a samsung 840 evo and the when i do a benchmark test it goes of the chart. I'd like to believe its just fast but it's too good to be true. I've tried a bunch of different benchmark programs but they all get this ridiculous fast readings. Do anyone else get these results? Do anyone know what the cause of this can be?   15. I built my pc about 2 years ago, But I bought the HDD about a year after. The power button on my case broke so like a dummy I just took a wire a put it on the motherboard and I did this for months (Don't ask my why lol) Then I think my power supply was slowly dying because It would take a couple of tries before it would actually kick on. Then I think finally it died and shorted out in the process when I tried to turn it on, Because were either there sata or power plugs on the HDD a little puff of smoke came out.. And even after I tried turning the comp back on It didnt smoke. So do you think it's just the pcb, Because before that, My hdd ran fine without any problems..
  16. I have a Samsung SP1203N IDE hard drive that won't spin up. What I tried so far is the freezer method where I left the drive there for four or five days to no avail; and putting a multimeter on diode mode and testing what I think are TVS diodes on the PCB (model BF41-00076A, the same board as this one) to get the following results: (Hard to read) AE O436, right beside the 4-pin power connector reads .457 in one direction and 1. (no zero next to that) in the other. 428 LEM, center right one in the picture reads .544 and "1." (Also hard to read) 420 1BL3, center left one reads .109 and "1." Does this mean that these diodes, if they are in fact diodes, are not the problem? If so, what could the problem be?
  17. Hello everyone, I'm new to SSD's and recently purchased a Samsung 840 EVO 500GB SSD for my PS4. I have a couple questions regarding the drive's garbage collection and TRIM support: I bought the SSD after reading numerous speed comparison charts and the SSD is still a significant upgrade, even though the PS4 only has a SATA II port. The PS4, however, doesn't have any kind of TRIM support. I also read that the Samsung SSD's have their own method of garbage collection that does its job while idle. So my first question is, will the SSD be smart enough to organize itself while the PS4 is in, say, stand-by mode? Or even if it's shut down?? If the SSD's grabage collection without TRIM isn't enough, then I assume I'd have to pop it out periodically and connect it to a computer that does support TRIM to keep it organized. I have a 2012 Apple iMac and an HP DV7 Windows 7 laptop which I confirmed definitely does support TRIM (the SSD can also fit as the primary drive). So my second question is, what ways can I set up the SSD with the laptop (or the iMac if it's possible) to let the TRIM do its job for the SSD? I looked into a sata to usb connection and planned to do it externally, but then read that TRIM can't happen through a USB, even if it is a 3.0, so I don't really have an idea on how to do that now. I apologize in advance if this has already been covered or if the answer's too obvious for its own thread, but like I said, I'm new to these drives and how they work as opposed to HDD's. Thanks in advance for reading my post and maybe even coming up with a solution. -Anthony
