Hi All, New here, so please be gentle....I'm a video editor that's in the field a lot and as things progress in my line of work, I'm dealing with larger files, multiple streams of HD footage, etc. that - up until now - I have managed to use the internal SSD of my MacBook Pro for. (Yes, I know, sharp intakes of breath abound. Small projects, fastest disk I have available, it works - I'm happy!) So I want to upgrade my external drives to use as scratch disks for my footage and still have the smooth playback I get at the moment, working with multicam sequences with 3 x 1080 video streams, so as to keep my boot SSD for OS tasks and not to wear the cells of my internal SSD. So here's my question... I ran the BlackMagic disk speed test on my MBP and get the results in the screenshot attached (+/-). Read = 447MB/s and Write = 335MB/s Looking at something like the Elgato Thunderbolt+ SSD, the benchmarks seem to be in the region of 308MB/s and 283MB/s respectively. Excuse my ignorance, but is this effectively meaning that I would get less performance from using this drive for my media scratch disk than my MBP internal SSD? Any light shed gratefully received. I don't want to shell out $500 for a drive that will slow down my workflow. Thanks in advance!
  4. I've been looking online for various SSDs, and I was leaning in favor of the Micron MX100 (for obvious reasons - price:performance). Anyways, a quick check and I found something else of interest: Is this a good deal? It is somewhat more expensive but you get eMLC, and real power loss protection (the Micron drive is not complete enterprise level power loss protection). The seller claims that they are new drives as well.
  5. Hi! I just bought an asus notebook with hdd, well performing and quite fast, but I'm thinking about passing to ssd. The notebook has windows 8, with the hdd divided into OS and Data partitions. Here is my question: do I have to sacrifice my hdd 750gb if I put the ssd? Can I keep both of them in the same notebook, maybe creating a partition OS on ssd and EXCESS DATA in 750GB hdd? In case it is possible, will my notebook be faster or it's nonesense doing it?

  7. We're setting up a system that needs to be capable of writing 2GB/s to disk. We have 9 SSD's, one with the OS and programs installed, and then an 8 Samsung 840 Pro SSD Raid 0 Array. The raid is hooked up the an Adaptec 8805 raid controller that is supposed to be capable of 12Gb/s per port. I've been struggling to get this system to have write speeds better than about 1850MB/s which is shy of the desired 2GB/s. Is there any ideas on what I could try to optimize my write speeds Thanks
  8. Hi, I have a samsung ultrabook with this SanDisk SSD i100 16GB used with expresscache technology. I managed the SSD long ago when I change vista for 7, and then as suggested, used MacDisk to create HFS+ partition and since then ExpressCache was working good, controlled by Samsung software. A couple of months ago, my computer started to slow down, and recently I found out that expresscache is not working anymore (its not present in the samsung software). So after deactivate the service (expresscache.exe) I tried to resintall, but didnt work. Then I try with diskpart to clean partitions, but I got the message "DiskPart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." I tried to do a surface wirte (destructive) test with hard disk sentinel, but it says "The media is write protected". In the overview, HDSentinel says that health of the disk is excellent and SMART says that all atrributes status are OK. The I booted with GParted but again no luck, input/output error, and the disk shows unallocated space and no partitions. While I am not a master in SSDs or hardware things, I understand more than some basics in computing. But I don't know what am I missing here, and don't know what kind of test should I do to definitely understand if it's just a software problem or if the disk is completely dead. In the latter case, what would have been the reason? Computer it's just 2 years old. Thanks in advance for any reply!

  10. Hi, I just installed a Megaraid 9361-8i, and configured it for 8 drives - 6x1TB + 1x2TB + 1x500GB (I had it laying around). I also have connected to my computer a Samsung SSD, connected to port 0 on my MB, separate from the new controller. Before installing, my SSD had most of the space allocated to the drive, but after installing and configuring the new controller, I find my SSD now has HALF of the space DE-ALLOCATED? Is this because of a setting I chose during configuration of the Megaraid? I remember seeing something about SSD caching IIRC, but didn't expect to lose 1/2 my SSD for that. So, my question is, how do I get that allocation back? Windows 7 Pro is not letting me expand the SSD volume back to its original size, so I'm a little frustrated. Any suggestions on how to get that space back? Thanks in advance, Bjorn

  12. Can someone please confirm what it means to "initialize" a virtual drive on an LSI MegaRAID card? I've read in some places that it's writing zeroes to all the drives (Fast Init only does it to the first/last 10 MB, Slow and Background Init do the entire drive space). Assuming I'm correct, if I'm setting up a RAID 1 or RAID 10 with SSDs that I've just secure erased, wouldn't writing zeroes to the drives (A) be total overkill since the drives are already consistent and ( severely impact performance until GC has time to clean things up? I've also heard that performance may be degraded if the RAID card isn't sure the drives are consistent. Is this true? If so, would running a consistency check shortly after setting up the virtual drive solve that? Many thanks in advance!

    The future of data storage.

    Recently I had to buy a new hard-drive because my 2tb WD was starting to fail after 3,5 years of service. Since I wanted the most available storage, right now, I went for the WD 4TB Green reasonably priced at 165$. After that I discovered, there is a Seagate 6TB HDD Out. But from what I have read, That is pretty much as far as traditional hard-disk technology is ever going to get. Maybe up to 10TB with Helium intead of air inside the enclosure but that is pretty much it. And SSDs are still far away from being a solution for massive storage, if they are ever going to get there. So my question is: what other technologies are being developed and/or discussed or theorized out there that would eventually lead to storage space like 20, 40, 100, 200 . . . TB. From what I understand, it has to be a completely new technology not even remotely similar to what we have today. Because right now we seem to be pretty close to the end of the rope with our rotating platters and severely overpriced SSDs (3.2TB at 18000$) And what do you think the capacity limits of SSDs are? We could of course stack more and more memory chips and platters onto each other but that would get ridiculous at some point like todays Video cards getting longer and thicker and hotter with every new gpu released.
