  1. Neither personally. You'll find Isilon, NetApp, and Quantum stor next and a few others at the top when it comes to content creation and editing for a studio. That's been my experience with enterprise accounts. The intelligent load balancing and tiering of files that the enterprise vendors offer make them standouts over just a low cost JBOD nas

    Automated recovery software?

BackupExec System Recovery (aprox $65 MSRP per desktop) This product can after installed, can be configured to dual boot into the preboot OS(WinPE) and restore the OS partition. It's a very cool product.

    OT Cisco question

For simplicity sakes, noise, ease of use, etc... I'd avoid a Cisco. There are things like Mi5, SonicWall, WatchGuard, etc that are much better alternatives.
  4. I find it hard to believe that even with an extended 3yr or 5yr warranty that SATA drives are not covered. It's been a while since I've purchased hardware, but all of my HP MSA20 drives were covered, DL230's, and a few others.. Did you come to this conclusion by reading something, or by actually speaking to someone? Perhaps a call is in order to verify their hardware warranty support on extended 4hr or next-day warranties?
  5. Windows server 2003 RIS or the newer replacement Windows Deployment service is very slick and stupid simple to setup. You can blast out new machine images in no time. Coming from a background of selling competing products to Microsoft's SMS/SCCM, I know how good and simple RIS/WDS is. Even Apple people can figure it out Good luck in trying to deploy Windows from a non-windows platform. You've made life quite hard for your self.

data management suggestions for > 1 M files?

Windows Desktop search what else? Well there is google desktop.. But Enterprise Vault only integrates with WDS Probably not the answer you were looking for. Is the only thing you want to do in "managing," them, is to be able to find them easily?
  7. If you are not using WDS or RIS, or some other commercial deployment tool, yet it's tricky and full of steps and prerequisites. Did you expect a GUI and wizard to walk you through the steps? If you can PXE boot to any OS, whether it's WinPE or even DOS, than ghost.exe or ghost32.exe is a valid option. With some work you can script the driver injection, sysprep, etc...

Need a NAS that integrates with AD

Guess it depends on the HDD config? I think that case, and dont hold me to it, is that it supports 3 or 4 HDD's. So an internal DDS or even internal LTO drive would work. Now the question comes down to what interface drive and what will fit slot wise... I've seen some IBM units that are USB, and U160 SCSI units for LTO-1. Can the case fit a SCSI card? That I'm not too sure of.
  9. Make sure that with iSCSI, that you have independent VMDK's for each volume/partition, and not a singular large VMDK with partitions within it. There is a flaw in vmware's iSCSI implementation that only opens one iSCSI connection per VMDK. Thus you will not be able to leverage the 3 1GB iSCSI ports you have on the equallogic array. As for RAID logic in a virtual environment, it's a moot point for most (>80%) folks... Just keep it to under 2TB LUN's, keep VMDK management based on disk activity, and do not put all SQL and Exch servers on the same LUN, do some sort of logistical balance of VM's, and you're in good shape. I'll put more time into my reasoning later today.

So no external connected SAS or SCSI tape drive huh? They do make internal DDS drives that fit in a 5.25 bay

Need a NAS that integrates with AD

    Huh? FlexStor 20M.
  12. All of this is good solid information, if you weren't virtualizing all the servers.
