Using an SSD as a USB 3 Data Drive

What is the chipset of the 3.0 case? Also same behavior on a usb 2.0 port?

    Samsung 2TB SSD: when?

FYI, if you use steam(maybe the other digital distribution software aswell ) on your desktop, you can install your games to different locatiosn. So it might be easier to get get multiple SSDs instead of waiting for 2TB to drop in price. It just recently dropped to 600USD for Black Friday.

    Patriot Blast 480GB SSD experiences?

Ditto. Blast has a very tempting prices but I suggest upgrading your budget a bit. Add 10-30 dollars and you should be able to get a Sandisk units from BestBuy or Amazon. If you have time, wait. CyberMonday/CyberWeek should mean more deals. Also, regardless of what SSD you buy, make sure you have a backup plan. Either an external HDD or Online storage...preferably both.
  9. Try using a live cd/USB method with gparted and see if it sees the USB drive properly. "C" key might be the key to boot to the device. If that doesn't work, find a person that has a windows machine or go find a public place with Windows computers.

It's pretty quiet here these days.

Tech support wise: As long as we have experienced and knowledgeable users, we can help out most people. Even if you knowledge is of ancient hardware from the last decade, you likely know some tricks that still matter and you probably know how to google Besides, I hate seeing threads with 1% solid reply and rest of it is just agreeing with the guy above him. Intel and Microsoft layoff are good evidence for the pc consumer market. Good thing we can diversify the reviews with enterprise content which will help. Want more threads? I think we need to do some giveaways... ohh make sure to announce them on them fancy social media sites that are helping to kill forums/blogs
  11. 1. No reason it should not. 2. http://media.bestofmicro.com/U/4/436540/original/msi_GT60-2PC-870M_inside-1-Copy.jpg Based on this image, you should just need a bracket. They have them online, but they are somewhat expensive: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-Genuine-GT60-GT680-GT683-MS-16F2-MS-16F3-MS-16F4-Hard-Drive-Bracket-/130911794448 You can get away with foam + screws from a local shop, but it is not ideal especially if you move the notebook around a lot. 3-7. Ideally, using a clean 8.1 iso is ideal, but finding one is getting more difficult. Try the burn recovery software, but make sure you unplug the 1TB before starting the install. If that fails, look into cloning software. Since you are buying a Samsung you can use Samsung Data Migration(or if you decide to get another drive, there are free programs like Macrium Reflect). Note: 1) Backup any important data 2) Unplug the 1 TB for first boot after cloning. You don't want any conflicts at the beginning or you could get a BSOD/windows recovery message. After first boot, just restart once to ensure computer still boots up, then shutdown and plug in the 1TB back in. 3) Read the guides online for these software, Make sure to copy all partitions and pay attention to which drive you are cloning too. 3) These software can clone a from large drive to a smaller driver, but I think it works best when go from small to big. If you 1TB is full, clean some stuff off or move it temporarily to another computer/external driver/online backup source.
  12. 3 dollars accurately describes most of the deals I didn't notice any killer deals on storage and most of the "advertised" other deals were gone in a minute. I: Finally picked up a newer cell phone... wanted a S5/6 but just can't justify the cost when an zenfone or Idol3 is 70% of a flagship phone at 30% of the cost( Idol 3 was $180 after code with prime shipping and no tax). Wanted a $20 laser mouse.... too late while searching for basic reviews Wanted the $115 40in HDTV... 10 min late and it was likely sold out in a min Got random arm/knee braces @ 3 dollars off Got polarized safety glasses from Amazon Warehouse @ like 5 off. Got Amazon GC multipack for the 10 dollar promotional credit...takes care of some Christmas shopping Also, Discover's 5% cashback for Amazon helped me pull the trigger.
  13. www.amazon.com/primeday Just a heads up that Amazon is having a prime sale today to celebrate turning 20. That means deals for Prime members. There is a free trial for Prime membership, but make sure to cancel if you don't use it a lot. Below is a short list of what may be offered and around what time courtesy of SD. Also don't forget to check the prices with other retailers as they will try to counter the sale. 14. http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/support/downloads.html I see some iso in the downloads sections. Have you already tried those? Those are generally what you use for USB or CD/DVD. Direct link for 840 EVO: http://ssd.samsungsemi.com/ecomobile/ssd/update3.do?fname=/Samsung_SSD_840_EVO_EXT0DB6Q.iso Use rufus to make a bootable USB. https://rufus.akeo.ie/
  15. I don't think most Americans will have to worry about the NSA backdoor. Mainly because it is probably easier to the NSA to hack into systems manufacture's database of stuff they get from their in-house malware/adware(Superfish etc), get facebook or the app company to give up the nicely formatted information on usage (no one ever reads the TOS or fixes their privacy settings). Between privacy and convenience, I will always choose convenience. Landlines weren't much better for security and even hard copies could be compromised since humans are not perfect and once they go through a digital copier, they will be stored on the internal HDD(which probably no IT department erases before getting rid of their old equipment).

  18. Yeah, it could just be a sign of a bad cable or bad device. Besides trying it on a different computer, reseat the connectors and double check in Safe mode to see if you can do 10 reads from a CD. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true If you can do 10/10 reads from a CD, Try: 1) Disable any Antivirus/protection software and try to do 10 more reads in normal mode. 2) see if these settings apply to XP. Ignore the info about readyboost Also, you might want
  19. Since you did a fresh Windows install, It could be related to a hotfix. For hotfix, make sure you have all OS updates installed(SP3 does help). There also seems to be a FW available for the drive. It might help if it is related to a bug that is now just appearing. http://www.asus.com/us/Optical_Drives/DRW24B1ST/HelpDesk_Download/
  20. Good point. It is not a good price for $/GB but I put it up there since it was a NAS drive. A NAS drive is designed for 24x7 NAS usage. A external HDD may have a completely different drive(Newegg's user Q/A section of the Toshiba external says it may be a Seagate drive while a SR user says they got a Toshiba drive. That can cause problems if you want use a product from Synology, QNAP and other NAS providers due to compatibility lists(not necessarily won't work but may introduce issues in the future.

  22. "Cyber Week" should be coming to an end tomorrow. If you don't see any new links, double check the crossed out ones. Companies may bring them back for a limited time to end out the week with a bang.

    Purchasing Samsung 840 EVO 500GB

Hi, It depends on what package you get. The model number corresponds to one of these packages below. If you want it to come with an adapter, make sure it is the deskop or laptop/notebook kit version. The picture below shows some details. If you just need an adapter, you can always buy one separately(don't worry about brand, just find one with a decent amount of reviews and a return policy). 24. Cyber Monday(well week now I guess) is on us. Still waiting for some better deals to show up, since most stores are just doing "leftovers". In the mean time, some advice: 1. Sign up for promo emails. They have codes in them for special offers/discounts. 2. Look for coupons or deals when using Paypal, Visa, Amex, or the stores own branded credit card 3. Check if the store will price match for Cyber Monday/week.
