  1. Just found out that RAID arrays can have alignment issues, separate from the well known 4K sector issue. I suspect it to be the cause of slow transfer rates on my Adaptec RAID 3805 RAID6 (5x Hitachi 2TB 7200 RPM) array. Nodesoft Disk Bench only gets 100MB/s writes and 80MB/s reads (these figures are more in line my Windows File Copy performance) http://www.nodesoft.com/diskbench But I don't know why the following benchmarks report so much higher Atto/HDtach: Crystal: However, I think I have confirmed that my array is not aligned, but am not sure.   2. Some other places say that the Toshiba 2TB / 3TB HDKPC08 HDKPC09 drives are reported to be manufactured by Hitachi, so are basically the same as the 7K3000 except with 4K alignment. Does anyone know if these drives are suitable for HW Raid like the past Hitachi drives (ie:TLER)?

    I moved my whole array to another computer, just to make sure it wasn't the motherboard, and installed the drivers. Same issue. I could try checking the drives individually like you suggest, but I'm going to attempt to reload the firmware first. Thanks for the test results!

    I hesitate to purchase more Hitachi for a reason. All the non TLER abled Hitachi and Samsung F3 have 400-480 'aborted commands', while the TLER enabled WD Blacks and EACS have 100-189 'Aborted Commands'. Clearly TLERless drives are causing more 'aborted commands' which maybe the source of poor performance. Switching all the harddrives to Hitachis might not help or could be worse unless I can enable the TLER on these. How can I enable TLER through an Adaptec RAID Controller in Windows 2003?

    Your quick replys are much appreciated. I had no idea HW RAIDs are so sensitive, it was much easier with Intel Matrix fakeraid, that thing worked with everything until i put in a TLERless WD EADS, which ended up badly.

    what sort of Read Performance should I be expecting on a HW RAID 6 array? I'm using Adaptec 3805 at RAID 6 with: 1x Samsung F3 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) 2x WD EACS 1TB (TLER enabled) 1x WD 1001FALS (TLER enabled) 2x Hitachi 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) According to HD Tach 3, I'm getting Average Read of 79.4MB/s this seems low to me. Additionally, I'm seeing some aborted commands in the Adaptec Storage Manager, About 100 to 400 depending which harddrive, after 24 hours of intensive usage. My Intel Matrix RAID 1 with 2x Hitachi 500GB can get 110MB/s average reads. Is something wrong?

So I have just replaced the 2 Samsung F1s with 2 Hitachi 1TBs, initialized all the drives and building a RAID6 array with the drives below. 1x Samsung F3 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) 2x WD EACS 1TB (TLER enabled) 1x WD 1001FALS (TLER enabled) 2x Hitachi 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) Build @ 27%.... Do Adaptec controllers have it's own disconnect timeout settings managed on the Controller side like LSI, 3ware?

Hardware RAID Controllers w/SATA & Build Fails I made multiple attempts to build a 6 drive RAID 6 array on a recently purchased/used Adaptec RAID 3805 SAS/SATA Controller (latest firmware) in Windows Server 2003 x64. So far I have encountered may array build fails. Available Harddrives: 1x Samsung F3 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) 2x Samsung F1 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) 1x WD EADS 1TB (TLER fail - firmware handy capped (manuf: aug 2010)) 2x WD EACS 1TB (TLER enabled) 1x WD 1001FALS (TLER enabled) On first attempt: 1x Samsung F3 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) 2x Samsung F1 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) 1x WD EADS 1TB (TLER fail - firmware handy capped (manuf: aug 2010)) 2x WD EACS 1TB (TLER enabled) Result: WD EADS 1TB Dropped out during Build/Verify, Rebuild Failed On 2nd attempt: 1x Samsung F3 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) 2x Samsung F1 1TB (no TLER set, no idea how) 2x WD EACS 1TB (TLER enabled) 1x WD 1001FALS (TLER enabled) Result: The 2x Samsung F1 1TB, kept on causing build fails.
