  1. What sort of failures and strange behavior are you seeing?

    Funnily enough another one failed today. About 800 power on hours in a Dell Latitude E5520. Same symptoms as before. System hanging and stuttering and getting BSODs, with iostor.sys storage timeouts in the event log. Run a SMART test and it might pass a quick test, but it'll fail a long one with bad sectors. Copying the data off the disc reports bad sectors that have to be skipped. Copy performance very slow - 700MB/minute imaging the drive to another disc.

    So far every one has been "fixed" by a secure erase followed by a few hours left sitting in a machine powered on and in the BIOS, as advised by Crucial's telephone support, but I cannot possibly re-deploy these drives even if they are no longer displaying symptoms. After this one today I think I'll be pulling the lot out of service as these users are all over the world and cannot afford unplanned downtime. Seen this now on 256GB and 128GB drives. My colleague has a 512GB version of this drive in his personal Mac that he bought with his own money, and as you can imagine now has cold feet!

    Crucial's support have been fairly useless, I don't know if I'm alone in facing these issues with these drives but if not it's a pretty big problem. Usage patterns are entirely regular and boring, Windows 7 / Office 2010 use with some CAD viewing and other boring business usage. Not power users by any stretch.


    As an addendum - I have loads of Samsung PM800 and PM810 (also known as 470 series) drives supplied as OEM fit in Dell machines, all working very well indeed after a couple of thousand power on hours and some with very heavy use.

  2. I've upgraded maybe 30 Dell Latitude E6510 and E6x20 machines to Crucial M4 SSDs, and I am beginning to see some failures and odd behaviour (all latest firmware). Usually the drive can be restored to normal behaviour with a secure erase, but this is really damned inconvenient.

    I have another 20 or so upgraded with Samsung 830s, and another 50 delivered with Samsung 470 or 830 drives - all of which are flawless. The performance of the Samsung is the equal of the Crucial and it is the SSD of choice for Dell, Apple and other OEMs - on the back of this it has become my "go to" SSD.

    I am currently running an Adaptec 39320A-R that happily runs my two SCSI harddisks (not in RAID) and a DAT72 drive on the 2nd channel. I'm thinking about getting an LSI Logic MegaRAID 320-2E for PCI-E, but I was wondering if anyone could confirm for me that non harddisk devices will work on this, and also that it will be happy running the drives non-RAID. Thanks all!


  4. Typical Samsung drive really - painfully average. At least it's quiet. Surprised by the reliabilityof the P80. I suppose the margin for error in the reliability survey is such that you could call 34% average though

    On the Sequential Transfer rate graph the legend says "Series1" and "Series2" instead of inside tracks, outside tracks or whatever term is used!


  5. The AthlonMP CPUs and the dated platform will be a far bigger bottleneck than AGP speed in an AthlonMP setup. You're looking at a 266MHz FSB and single channel DDR266 - it was great when the platform was launched almost 4 years ago, but is very sad now.

    I see very, very few reasons why you should be building an AthlonMP system now, and gaming is certainly not one of them. Pick up cheap Presionia Xeons on eBay and one of the i875 based Xeon boards from Asus or something along those lines, if money is tight.

    I have to agree with BFG9000 - the best way to get clean audio out of a PC is to take it out digitally and perform digital to analog conversion offboard. I don't use my PC for listening to music so it is not connected to my hi-fi at all, but I have a set of Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 speakers that connect to my audigy with a single digital cable carrying all 5 channels. You could presumably do something with this digital output to take 5.1 output from a PC to a surround reciever with appropriate digital inputs.

    I would guess that all but the cheapest and nastiest offboard DAC is going to kick the ass of anything living inside a PC. I laughed so much when I saw that Aopen board with the vaccum tubes inside - 100% gimmick IMHO.

    I've seen it on a lot of systems, and it is very dependent upon the optical drive. Sometimes it's only a fraction of a second stall, on other drives it can be a couple of seconds. I believe it is only Explorer that's doing it.

    I suspected it was something like windows waiting for the drive to respond, but I am at a loss as to why it has such a crippling effect on Explorer - can't it just wait in the background?

    The worst thing to do is to insert a blank CD and then straight away start Nero - the whole PC just sits there being unresponsive until the drive has finished it's stuff.

    For those who asked, the particular system I'm tormenting at the moment is a dual Xeon 3.2 on a Supermicro X5DAL-TG2 (E7505). Optical drives are connected to the motherboards IDE ports. All drivers are the latest. As I said, however, this happens to a greater or lesser extent on every machine I have ever used. Odd thing is, it isn't always consistent on the same machine.

    I'll be extremely grateful if anyone can answer this simple question. Why is it that on any PC, no matter how manly, putting a CD in an optical drive causes the PC to become unresponsive for a couple of seconds?

    I am using a Dual Xeon 3.2GHz system, and I fail to see why this happens.

    Before anybody suggests it, yes I am sure that all drivers are current, the drive isn't boned and DMA is on. This happens on EVERY PC running Windows, no matter what combination of hardware. Some optical drives cause the freeze to last for longer. With my Pioneer DVR-A09 it lasts an absolute age when you put in a blank DVD. My question is why does this happen.

    I'm more interested in Dual Core because it makes it far, far cheaper to build a 4 way system. When Dual Core Xeons and Opterons come out it'll be possible to pack four cores in a PC chassis on a affordable (ish) motherboard. No more crappy 400MHz FSBs and massive, massive price premiums for 4 way systems! The way Intels pricing seems to be heading, it'll be possible to build a 4 way system for only slightly more than a 2 way system costs today. Now that's worth getting excited about.

    I can't think of anything non-snarky to say right now. Back it up with some kind of documentation. The card's internal circuitry doesn't have anything to do with the bus it's attached to.


    No, but it's interface with the rest of the machine does. This is I/O we're talking about...

    You could have a chip capable of shifting 2 GB/sec, and if you attach it to standard PCI it'll still have to go at >133MB/sec. Bridging also adds more overhead, possibly increasing latencies and thus reducing peak bandwidth.

    Here is a story describing a program from Lycos that runs as a screensaver, and continually requests small amounts of data from webservers used by known spammers to sell products. Not DDoS, it just aims to cost them a fortune in bandwidth.

    From the US I guess you'd say "international english". The only way we can even hope to wipe out spam is to make it non profitable, and this is one way to do that.

    Generally I have noticed that people see where they live in a negative light, and anywhere they visit in a positive light. I'm not sure if it's the novelty of being somewhere else, or just the natural human desire to find something better than what you already have that colours perceptions. I'm sure if you lived there for 10 years you'd think that it was just as bad, just in different ways. Same goes for anywhere in the world.

    As for the slow driving - that's a negative in my opinion :D
