  1. So i finally bought it. It's very noisy when powered on the first time, then when the batteries are fully charged the fans lower their speed a little, but they are still too noisy for me. Way too noisy, and i won't be able to let it run this way (it's sitting near my desktop with my computers, built only with quiet parts). I saw the fans inside were common 12V 80*25mm, so i'm wondering if there is a way to replace them for quieter ones without harming the UPS ? I don't know the cooling needs of this UPS, but as i already have a 100% fanless APC SMT750I line interactive i think it could be possible. Also the output air is still pretty cold. On the other hand i really don't want to destroy anything by modding the inside or by making it overheat in case of insufficient cooling/higher load... What can i do ?
  2. By low speed you mean it's really quiet ? Does the fan speed up with the load ?
  3. Have you checked ? I'm still hesitating (there's a 10% rebate on a nearby shop for a few day left on the eaton stuff) I'll need one but i don't want it to ruin all the effort i put into building quiet desktop & servers... Here i read: Here i also found some pieces of information : Here i read: and But that's with the fans at full speed. I also asked Eaton and Brian (thanks to him) answered me :
  4. How is the noise level ? I know that the fans works at full speed when battery operation (charging/discharging) and perhaps when the load is high, but how is it in normal operation ?

About Preemptive Wear Leveling (PWL) on WD

Thanks! I also wondered what were these AV drives ?

About Preemptive Wear Leveling (PWL) on WD

You mean normal hdd makes their head touching the disk surface during spin up/down ???
  7. I bought a WD20EARX that make a spinup buzzing sound regularly, can i use wdidle3 to fix it ? This model isn' t in the WD compatibility list.

    My 60TB Build Log

Hi, i' m very interested with your project as i plan to build the same type of setup. Don' t know what type of card to buy (1280ML, 1880ix ?) I think of a single 24*3TB RAID6 with 6*EX36B LianLi, but a little afraid of the limited room between card and hdd racks, here are some pics found on the web: (last one is a ARC-1170) Perhaps i should use other hdd backplane, but i don' t want them to be noisy (too many have 40/80mm and the LianLi racks comes with 120mm fans), any advices ?

Lian Li PC-A77: 12TB Built out right

Yeah, that was my problem with this type of case, plenty of hdd racks available but awful cooling... I saw newer Vxxxx revision has more 120mm fans, one at the second hdd row (the hotspot) & another on top corner (another hotspot, where all the heat from mobo/CPUs accumulate) Some drives are near 60°C (on first hotpost) even with the 120*38mm panaflo (and i removed the front blackice), now i leave it open all the time with a big desk fan for hdd cooling.. I' m thinking of replacing my V2100 with this wonderful A77 (and/or the 7200.8 by cooler WDGPs)

Lian Li PC-A77: 12TB Built out right

Thanks ! I' m planning to build a small 24/7 homeserver like that but with 8/12*1TB 5400RPM & E4400+ same mobo, i was looking for the stacker but this A77 seems to be the perfect case. Not for the card/hdds, but more with the total capacity of the array vs non-recoverable errors, like comments on this 19TB rig.

Lian Li PC-A77: 12TB Built out right

Awesome ! What' s the CPU/mobo/system ? What' s the : -noise ? (except the raptors) -heat ? -power consumption ? Is the hotspare really needed with RAID 6 ? About the 3*raptors, is it a home made rack or a rack for LianLi PC343 ? Isn' t it too dangerous having such a big array ? I heard stuff about data corruption of very large arrays.

    Avoiding resonance: how?

interested in making a silent 8*WD GP RAID in a Stacker 810, what racks do you use ? Standard 4-in-3 Coolermaster ones ? Does the blue dampeners works well ?
  13. green power & 7200RPM ?

Need opinions on choice of RAID

Why, big drives fails more than small ones ?? There is 2 "partity drives" in each case.
  15. Why so much difference between HDtach & ATTO ?
  16. Is there any RAID edition like the WD1000FYPS for the WD10EACS ?
  17. I would like to replace the WD Scorpio 80GB 5400RPM installed in my new MSI Wind U100 with a better/bigger drive. Is there some good drive/brands in the 2.5" segment highly recommended to buy ? (new to this kind of drives) I don' t know if a 7200RPM will overheat ? Or perhaps a not so expensive SSD like the OCZ Core ? But it' s still smaller & don' t know if it' s really worth it. So: -500GB 5400RPM (hitachi 5K500/samsung M6S HM500LI /Y (difference ?)/..?) or -320GB 7200RPM (WD3200BJKT/BEKT (diference ?)/Hitachi 7K320).. ?) or -128/250GB SSD OCZ Core v2 ?
  18. The Momentus 7200.3 looks fine. Is there so little difference on power requirements between 7200 & 5400RPM 2.5" ? Do you know if some 7200RPM 500GB are coming soon ?
  19. Also interested in noise/power consumption/vibration of black edition (compared to GPs)

Which raid6 adapter for home file server

What about the WD1000FYPS (WD10EACS RAID edition), cheaper than WD10EACS ? A question about that, do you know how i can know if/how these cards (areca for example) manage TLER ?
  21. What about noise/heat/power ? vs the 5400RPM WD1000FYPS/WD10EACS ? (I suppose the black caviar is more performant ?) It' s for a 8*1TB drive array with areca controller (24/7 homeserver/download, so silence & powersaving needed) Samsung F1 looks nice but is it really reliable now ?
  22. I think it' s normal, i ran the bench with all the stuff (downloads/copying files/720p video playing...) at the same time. HDTune alone returning normal (~70MB/s - 15ms) results.
  23. Hello, i want to build a small 24/7 internet server/download machine with : DG965WH (passive chipset/onboard video) E4400 + SI-128 + silent 120mm 2GB DDR2 crucial Seasonic S12 550+ Areca ARC-1220 8ports, normal or ML, with the passive heatsink. ...and 8*1TB drives in RAID6 (+2/RAID1 OS boot drive) I want it to be quietest as possible because of 24/7 operation, but fast enough to handle multiple p2p/ftp uploading/downloading & some video streaming through the network & internet. (gigabit network & ~8Mb/1Mb internet) 1/The drives: The WD GP seems perfect to me (cheap, silent, powersaver & cool running), but i don' t know if 5400RPM will be fast enough for downloading/uploading a lot of things simultaneously... I saw this about multithread performance; it seems bad. I also read this about CRC errors on a WDGP. I don' t know if it' s a drive problem/if there is a lot of drives concerned ? The other choice is obviously the new Samsung F1 that i have waited so long, a little more noisy/powerhungry/hot but alot faster (but a guy found it more quiet here) I don' t know how it works with multithread stuff, but i also view in this thread that a lot of F1 seems to have a lot of problems... Seagate 7200.11 is more noisy (but has a good working NCQ) and i' m afraid about the power requirements (i remember my 16*7200.8 array, with 2.8A each...) The Hitachi 5platter is also noisy/hungry/etc... 2/I also wanted to know the compatibility of theses hdds with Areca' s controllers (ARC-1220 /ML) 3/Do you have some silent case ideas ? I was first thinking of the CoolerMaster Stacker 810, all good but has a giant opening, so i can 't put some noise dampening foam... The new LianLi PC80 looks interesting but the stock fans are 140mm & i don' t know at all if they are noisy (i' m planning to use noctua S12-800 ~everywhere) The case will be on the floor, so USB/power/... on the top is good. Thanks !
