  1. thanks for all the input. I plan on going Core 2 Duo shortly just trying to setup this Xeon in the interim, this will be relegated to server only duty soon.
  2. Thanks 888, any value added if I put a 3rd SG320 drive on that raid array?
  3. Well I sold all my Dual P3 Server and Firewalls on ebay and I sold off my Opteron 170 setup on the forums. I will build this as a no-holds-barred media ripping/compressing work station since that is what I have been doing mostly of late using FAIRUSE (actualy uses 2 processors / cores ) and dvdfab and dvd shrink(Netflix is a bad thing )I figured i'd get through with this as my media ripping phase & double as a home server later until I can save up for a Core 2 Duo setup when I see more of a use for 2 cores and i get the $$. Anywho here's the specs: SuperMicro X6DAL-B2 Mobo http://www.supermicro.com/products/m...5/X6DAL-B2.cfm Dual 3.4GHz Xeon Noconas (EMT64, 1 meg L2) ASUS6600 PCIe Addonics 64-bit PCI-X 4-port SATA-II RAID card http://www.addonics.com/products/hos.../adsa3gx4r.asp 4GB DDR2 Ram 2XWD500GBSATAII Drives 2XSeagate 320GB SATAII 16MB cache 1XMaxtor 300GB SATA 16MB Cahe 3XWD180GB IDE Lite-On Dual Layer IDE DVDRW SILVERSTONE ST85ZF PSU Given what I have, what do you think would be the optimal setup for my drives? Kind of a Raid n00b but I am tempted in getting a third drive of the Seagate 320GB (~$94@newegg) and setup a Raid 0 array for boot and working the ripping / encoding. Then use the 2 500GB's and 3 180GB for storage. No real mission critical data here, have that all backed up externally I Have a 150GB Raptor and my 7900GT set aside for my impending Core 2 Duo Build, but am open to suggestions. Researching this a bit more I see that this card can attain speeds of throughput up to 200 Mbytes/sec when 4 drives are striped together?( I am guessing this is RAID 0). Kind of expensive and hard to beleive but those speeds seem amazing Perhaps this is with Raptors they attained this speed? Looking for you all to chime in with advice, thanks!

    dual rail vs single

Also forgot to add, the PC Power & cooling has virtually no fluctuations what so ever underload. Beleive me this PSU is awesome! Good luck deciding, isn't pc hardware cool?

    dual rail vs single

I have just 6 HD's (2 SATA & 4 IDE) a P4 3.8 and 1 6800 GTOC PCIe and had to upgrade and chose the PC Power and Cooling 510 Express/SLI. I love the headroom on the amperage you stated, the stability and the 5 year guarranty. it's a 510W rated PSU but the peak is 650W. Most other PSU's drop wattages at peak. I had the same dilema trying to justify the costs and decided that since I upgrade often, that I would invest in a PSU that would be good for years to come so in the long run the cost was justified in my eyes.

    dual rail vs single

if you are planning on going to an SLI setup or have a PCIe vidcard, then I reccommend the PC Power & Cooling SLI approved PSU. If not going SLI then go with the OCZ Powerstream line of PSU's. They are awesome. System stability is key for me, and the more 12V rails you have the more stability you will have as you as components or upgrade them (especially todays power thirsty vid cards and single & dual core cpus). See my chart below: Component Requirement Line(s) Used AGP Video Card 30W – 50W +3.3V PCI Express Video 50W – 100W +12V Average PCI Card 10W +5V DVD/CD 20W – 40W +5V and +12V Hard Drive 10W – 30W +5V and +12V Case/CPU Fans 3W (ea.) +12V Motherboard (w/o CPU or RAM) 50 – 100W +3.3V, +5V, and +12V RAM 8W per 128MB +3.3V Pentium III Processor 38W +5V Pentium 4 Processor 70W – 100W +12V AMD Athlon Processor 70W – 100W +12V As you can see as the user switches to PCIe vid cards the need for more power on the 12V rail increases.
