    Platters

I maxed out at about 130MB/s transfering between the two about 70MB/s for a complete rsync of ~350GB very nice considering my old drives would max out at around half that No smartctl errors

    Platters

I've been waiting for what seems like forever to see a single or dual platter 7200rpm drive using the latest platter density. I'm disappointed at how slowly the industry is moving with regards to mechanical drives. Yeah we've got massive green drives, but what about the low/mid range (size-wise) 7200rpm drives ? it seems like they've abandoned using the latest tech on anything under 2TB green drives. Anybody else feel this way ?

    Platters

^^ apparently the EARS drives use 667 platters up to 2TB Densities I just pulled the trigger and purchased two 1TB FAEX drives They were sold out of the EARS drives (only had 1 returned "open box" one left) which would have been $60 cheaper. I was half thinking of getting an FAEX and an EARS and benchmarking/comparing them to each other ohh well. I'll let you know how they work soon as I install and test them Every since maxtor and quantum got gobbled up i've only purchased western digital drives, I guess i'm somewhat partial to them (havn't had one fail yet).

    Platters

Ok, thanks for the conversation. I might just pickup two WD6402AAEX drives even tho they are 2 platter non-AF, that would be plenty of space for my needs atleast. Exactely the same platter density/technology as my 320GB drives that i've had since 2006

No problems, just a matter of finding an AF drive Are any of the WD black drives AF ? ie: 640GB

    Platters

Another thing that somewhat bothers me is I was looking forward to toying with an AF drive in linux. Seems the only way to do that is to get a big green drive. Not like I want to boot the drive, would just like to play with something interesting/new. A small AF drive doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me as long as they sold them with clear warning for "those" people.

Yeah that samsung F4 would have been perfect if they didn't handicap it like that Almost broke my heart to see.

    Platters

7200rpm ~640GB 1 platter drive, or ~1.3TB 2 platter drive I'd like to upgrade my 2x 320GB wd blacks single platter (one mirrors the other) that have been full for a year. I've been waiting for a density doubling. Maybe i'm asking too much, and should just pick up 2x single platter 500GB drives to tide me over
  9. Is this a single platter drive ?

    800GB/platter ?

800GB wd green Does this look like a single platter drive to you guys ? i'm interested

    800GB/platter ?

have they not surprised us before ? Although, judging from what little benchmark data I can find, you should be right.

    WD15EARS-00MVWB0 - 2 or 3 platter drive?

Bump! Have you weighed it yet ?

    WD15EARS-00MVWB0 - 2 or 3 platter drive?

I'd like to know too. I noticed that newegg is carrying EURS drives now, anyone tried one of those yet ?

Is Western Digital trustful HDD vendor today?

Nice read Tux I too am a linux user, the 4K sector size articles I read had me all excited. Looking at those posts on your link have me worried ... I had to email wd to find out the platter density on 2 drives I had. The tech support was fast and helpful, but i'd also like to see them clearly print numbers somewhere on the label indicating the platter count/density. Also it's a shame wd puts so much emphasis on green drives. green-blue-black just seems like they are trying to do too much to me. Why not only green and black, with sizes for each released on the same date. Not green versions coming out a few months earlier, like they are doing now

where are the 3 TB internal drives?

    750GB/platter is a welcome surprise I'd like to see a 1 or 2 platter 7200rpm black version

How do you backup your data ?

I use rsync to maintain an identical drive in the same system. Then I rsync the most important files across my network to another computer. I'd probably use hardware raid1 if I had the money, software raid just doesn't entice me.
  19. The converters don't seem to change the speed on them. They run at about the same speed as they had previously for me.
  20. I'm using two myself to convert pata drives to sata connectors Abit Serillel II Syba bi-directional The abit one has worked perfectly since I got it 2 or 3yrs ago with a motherboard purchase (Abit is no longer selling them) The Syba one works perfect also (had it for 5 months), but I had to re-solder the cable to a molex because it was annoying and stuck out too far I thought I fried my motherboard the first time I installed the Syba one. I had started it up with the switch in the wrong direction, and even after reversing the switch the system refused to boot for an hour or so ... be careful there! Have not tried it with a sata drive in an older motherboard yet.

Western Digital to release >2TB soon?

I'm guessing the external 3TB seagate reviews should be popping up any day now ...

Western Digital to release >2TB soon?

Unconfirmed seagate 3TB benchmark 178MB/s is a pretty nice boost if these results are right
  23. just wondering if anyone has heard anything i would like to see much larger buffers on hard drives too
  24. just wondering if something like this exists and maybe can be put in a raid config for a small but fast swap partition or something thanks
