  1. I don't understand.. How could there be any drive that didn't slow down while defragging?

    The point is, those activities together are *much* slower on the 36GB raptor.

    Not that there was no slowdown on the X15.

    My workload experience seems to fall in the 4 I/O - 8 I/O range. The 36GB Raptor I have just couldn't keep up w/ my X15.

    I'm still interested in the 740 for my gaming PC...and possibly my next workstation board (w/ built-in SATA ports). It sounds *much* better than the 360 that I have...much better.

    I'm glad to hear another glowing report. Cheap, reliable performance is always a good thing.

    If the 740 is closing in on $200US I'll have to pick it up. But I'm waiting to see what Canon announces for their camera lineup this year before spending any money. :)



  2. I used to use Timbuktu.... well can't really recommend that one...

    Of course, I didn't care for PCAnywhere either.

    But I can 100% recommend Raritan's products. KVM over IP.

    Check it out here.

    I used the Paragon system a *lot*, and the Z-series is what you're after...unless you need the power of the Paragon system.

    You can see/manipulate the boot screens (POST, edit BIOS, etc.), and of course use the operating system.

    For software console, why not use the Admin terminal server under the OS?



  3. Unfortunately, in the latter segment, there are still individuals who will spend MORE money on a louder and slower SCSI drive based on these premises:

    1) the Raptor is 10,000 RPM

    2) the Raptor does not have a SCSI interface


    3) there is no way the Raptor can be faster than a SCSI drive.


    I'm glad I read this today. Really made my day so far.

    Of course, when SAS makes it to market, the Raptor *will* have a SCSI interface. :blink:

    I would think that labeling the drive "Enterprise-class" would suck in folks that like "Pro" and "Ultra" on their consumer goods. (My wife thinks I'm one of those...)

    I'm surprised that Dell has not jumped on this and offered Raptor RAID systems in their lower end (mid?) servers. Need to go check... I would not expect to find Raptors in their $400US line-up, but you never know.

    WD is obviously targetting this drive to the low-end (internal or small array) SCSI market. I hope it succeeds. As the "low-end" enterprise discovers it is a excellent performer, it will move up market.

    As much as I liked Seattle (and Vancouver, B.C), I hope to retire to the Santa Barbara or Monterrey Bay area of California. I love the Pacific coast.

    But Yosemite is really nice..... :blink:

    In the mean time, their are 40 states I haven't lived in yet.

    I'll agree about those temp sites.

    Somewhere my folks have a photo of me next to one of those large round thermometers in our backyard. Visalia, CA. Temp was 118F. Later in the day it hit 120F. That was back in the '70s...arguably the most interesting decade of the 20th century. :) Every year we had temps over 110 for weeks at a time.

    Oh well.

    I'm sure I'll be stuck here in Chicago for a few more years. -5F today, with -30F or -40 windchills. I think I'll wear short sleeves to keep my reputation as a "freak." :lol:

  5. Exactly. Redundancy == Even distribution of data

    No matter what you start with, you would have to "create" drives of the same capacity. Whether you buy them that way, or partition them, the result is the same.

    (Reminds me of another RAID / LUN story...)

    The concept of mixing and matching drives is not new, and solutions were in place to work around mis-matched drives.

    Again, I still consider it a work around. But if it's a non-critical machine, and you want to try something a little.

    Sometimes I should put a disclaimer in my signature:

    Plenty of ideas are fun to try on your desktop, or "project" machine.

    Risk of data loss is quite high when tinkering. :)

    Don't try this on production servers.

    That particular incident involved a High-Availability server (RDBMS) that needed more space, so I had to expand the array while the system was running, while also moving to 4GB disks -- gotta love Unix and SCA SCSI. When the office shut down for a holiday a few months later, I replaced the older disks with the new 4GB disks (backups, recreate arrays, restores, etc. )


    I agree with the backup suggestion. I do that myself.

    You are better off relegating the older, smaller drives to lighter duty. Synchronizing folders is really handy.

    Another thing to consider:

    Windows allows you to "mount" a volume to a folder, like Unix. So you can mount one of those older drives to the "C:\Data" folder, and you will have that entire drive for your data, while your operating system and programs are on your newer, faster drives.

    It "feels" like one drive since all paths start with "C:" but physically they are separate and you can use more of your total disk space.

    If you are just looking to expand capacity, I would give this a try.


  6. Specs should be available from your retailer, or the manufacturer's website.

    Looking at Max current, I would want no less than 25A on those lines...30A would be better.

    20-25A on the 12V line depending on how many drives you want in your system.

    For example, here are some great numbers for the Enermax EG365P-VE :

    +3.3V 32A

    +5V 32A

    +12V 26A


  7. Once upon a time, you could divide up SCSI drives into Logical units...LUNs.

    As you pointed out, all forms of RAID (RAID 0 is NOT RAID) require matched disk sizes or your lose space (smallest capacity times number of disks).

    So, with LUNs you could divide a drive into multiple the drive level (LUN 0 was the entire drive.)

    So...if you had a 2 80GB drives and 2 120GB drives, you could divide the 120GB drive into 2 drives: LUN 1 = 80GB, LUN 2 = 40GB.

    You could then create an array on the 4 80GB drives, and still have the 2 40GB drives for another array.

    In practice what would happen is you would have 6 or so 2GB drives in an array, then buy 6 4GB drives. You could expand your 6x2GB array to 12x2GB and then create another 6x2GB.

    (Of course, if you bought another round of 4GB drives, then you'd break the 12 disk array to get a 12x4GB array....)

    It was an iterim solution for integrating changing disk capacities into your storage arrays. Briding the gap.

    I am not sure if the current crop of SCSI RAID controllers support LUNs, but the new generation of SATA controllers do support multiple arrays on one disk. NetCell was one I think.

    BTW, RAID is Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks.... (But that's another story)

    and JBOD is just that ... not RAID. JBOD is the opposite of RAID. (But if the usage is changing, so be it. )

    It was my understanding that the PSA does the exact same thing as the diagram above:

    Uses NAT to separate the printers from the populace.

    Basically, it's an AD-compatible router

    Seriously though, you could buy a couple of those $400 Dell "servers" and cluster them.

    Depending on what relationships you have with VARs you could pick up that HP unit for $1200-1500. Probably the same price as those two Dell systems once you finished upgrading them.

  9. Just find a solid 300-350W power supply. As stated, make sure the 3.3V and 5V lines have lots of current.

    I have a similar setup as you are running in a Shuttle XPC with a 220W supply. Probably sucks a litte more power.

    That calculator is a worse case scenario. 25W for a harddrive???

    I plugged in my know, the stuff running fine for months in with 220W PSU... it says the minimum I need is 320W.

    1GB DDR400 (2x512)

    36GB Raptor

    120GB WD 1200JB

    USB Card reader

    ATI 9800Pro (mild O.C. 400MHz??)

    Just to show the capabiliity of a properly designed PSU - 3.3V & 5V lines carry much of the power.

    BTW, I can't expand this system, so more power is not necessary.

    I still recommend a high-quality 350W PSU for standard ATX systems. Quality over quantity.

    Home: Go to beginning of a line (of text), to the top of a web page, etc. I use it often onreally long webpages where scrolling up would take a while and would eat clockcycles otherwise used by D2oL. Del, I use all the time to, uh, delete things. Insert: See Prof.Wizard's post.

    Can't you use the 10-key pad? I was commenting more on the redundancy.

    And I was commenting more on the placement of the Win-keys. They can be handy but I still use Ctrl-Esc - "R" and type in the command. :)

    They haven't been around long enough to retrain my fingers when on autopilot...

    Basically I would like the old IBM 5150 w/ a USB connection.

    And I do find the "Helpful" labels to be amusing...



  11. I hate it when it's lower than 50 below...

    For the record, when I lived in California, the temps frequently exceed 110F..albeit only for a few weeks (<1 month). We used to fry eggs on the sidewalk before school (they never really cook right though). Those average temp/weather things are hilarious.

    And I spent a few weeks in Death Valley during late August...and LOVED it!

    The heat was AWESOME! I think it was in the 120's. I wanted to walk everywhere! LOL Must have enough Native blood in me.

    I can handle extreme temps in either direction.... I just hate the ice. I love snow. :blink:

    I'd have to think about the Dim Sum though. :-) None in Pheonix?

    I'd rather live near SanDiego to avoid the freezing winters...but hey, I've already lived there. Time to live somewhere else.

    Give me 90F w/ 100% humidity and I'll complain about the heat. :D


  12. I'd really have to look, but I'm pretty sure the "Shift Lock" has been left of the A-key (more correctly next to the Shift key) since the dawn of the QWERTY key layout.... you know before "1" had it's own key. :)

    I learned to type on a c.1900 Royal manual typewriter. When I started working somewhere that had the "new" IBM Selectric, I knew that God himself had given me a very special gift. :lol:

    While you're on your rant...or getting that much needed stiff long has it been since you used your "SysReq" key? :blink:

    Or the Windows Menu us smaller Ctrl and Alt keys?

    Personally I don't understand "sport" vs "sports." It is plural because their is more than one professional sport. *shrug*

    I find it funny that smart people cannot be athletes and atheletes cannot be smart. Most college athletes and many professional athletes know their career will not last more than a few years (<10) So they learn a "day job".

    Why is that plodding along in life (60 year-old scientists) is more noble than making your mark another way.

    Haven't nearly all scientific breakthroughs been made by folks under the age of 30?

    (Also note that the some of the smartest people on earth are not employed in intellectual pursuits. )

    How about the goofball that scientifically proved global warming by selectively ignoring temperature data and "correcting" data he thought to be in err. To me that's a shining example of today's scientist. "Hey I wanna be rich, too. " He sure made a name for himself.

    Are you a scientist? Want to make some money? Then find a company that really wants to prove its products are safe...or their competitor's product is not. Have them fund your study.

    How about an entire branch of science that models an animal based on it's head...or just a jawbone. Then tells how said animals lived and died.

    Puhleeze. What total crap.

    Every sector of society has their famous and infamous.

    Oooo! About public transportation:

    In Chicago Public Transportains kills/injures a lot of people each year. Trains derail frequently. Chunks of buildings fall from skyscrapers can kill pedestrians....

    People and their pets die when walking on metal gratings...

    It's much safer in my car. Really it is.

    The further you get from the city, the less public transportation there is. Even though surrounding areas are more populated.

    The rest of the world is just jealous that they cannot be as fat and happy as we are. :P

    If that is all that is on the one bus, you would have >512MB/s in both directions. True?

    You could handle two U320 busses at speed and still have bandwidth to send the data.

    The only issue I see is when you want to move to another motherboard. You may want a self-contained RAID card.



  16. There is also talk of a problem with these panels (LG-Philips used in Dell 2001FP, NEC 2080UX+ & iiyama E511S-B ) that there is a horizontal grain on the screen caused by a thin black border around each pixel. (apparently good response times but unsuitable for photographic work.)

    Much may have been extreme...I was really thinking a few months. Which is a long time for technology these days. :lol:

    I'll have to scrutinize the panel. I don't see the grain, and photoediting is a primary use for this monitor. Plus the thing sits less than 1ft from my face. :blink:

    I find it hard to believe I can't see it if it's really there.

    I use the LCD for 99% of all adjustments, especially sharpness (!), and then swap over to a CRT for final color.

    The final step on the CRT is really not necessary for most of the shots I take. Plus I'm getting use to the Black level on the LCD -- and what it *should* look like.

    I have conversed with many pro photographers that use this panel, and do the same swap for critical shots. The LCD is much easier on the eyes.

    "Unsuitable" seems a bit . . . harsh. ;)

    Are you in Seattle? Used to spend a decent amount of time in the city.

    And when the sun comes out late summer, businesses shut down so everyone can run out for an hour and catch some rays! (Guess I miss the place. :) )

    My favorite cold weather story about Seattle was one day where 1.5" of snow fell during the day...a blizzard!

    People stopped right on the interstate, even in the middle lanes, and got out of their cars walking off to find public transportation. HAHAHahahahahahah!

    I had to swerve amongst parked cars on I-5! AHAHahahahaha

    Loved the area otherwise.

    Back to the present:

    It's supposed to be in the single digits or 0 tonight here, west of Chicago. I don't really care about the wind chill's below 50 so it's bitter cold! :lol:

    Still cannot agree that serial technology (at the same throughput) is simpler.

    It is squeezing one side of a balloon. It's just shifting work from one side of the industry to the other.

    It is easier for designers to trace a handful of lines vs. "dozens" but the materials must be of a *much* higher quality. And tolerences are much tighter, which require additional logic to ensure signal/data integrity. -- which also must run at very high speeds....

    It boils down to who is backing the technology.

    The MCA bus is superior to the PCI bus (which it predates). But compatibility and sponsorship relegated it to high performance machines. Heck, MCA is a more than a match for PCI-X. And how many years separated the two??

    But I digress...

    Yes, PCI-E will succeed because Intel is pushing it. Other chipset manufacturers will cater to the "PCI-E and AGP, too" crowd.

    Of course they may still be smarting from the botched 64-bit revolution of theirs...and move cautiously. I hope not. Bring on the new tech., I say!

    I would need to visit Flagstaff again before deciding on that area.

    Objectively, one could measure the number of positive and negative remarks given in a particular story. You could measure the same for for liberal and conservative issues.

    You should not trust any single source of information. Consider it RAID5 on an intellectual level.

    If you are missing pieces of a story from one source or another, go find the rest of the story (parity).
