LAME 3.97 final came out today, as you may or you may not know. I downloaded the zip, unpacked it and put the files under "Program Files" in "lame3.97" folder. Strange things begun to happen, as the said folder wouldn't open: Access Denied. I tried to delete it: Access Denied. I tried Unlocker (http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/): Cannot Delete Folder. I tried to reboot Windows many times - the folder won't budge. I tried to delete it under Safe Mode: Access Denied. I took the HDD to another computer and tried to delete the folder there (from that computer's Windows system): Access Denied. I'm out of ideas. At first I thought, that the HDD might be faulty, so I tried the same thing on another computer: Now I cannot delete the folder from there also! I did the chkdsk /f. I did System Defrag. I don't know what else to do.

Oh, I answered before I saw your reply, qasdfdsaq. Thanks anyway. Maybe from now on, I'll at least know what I am doing, when I'll have to deal with this next time (hopefully never again!)

I did it!!! I googled a little, and I found the way to enable "Security" tab (Disable "Use Simple File Sharing"). Then I somehow managed to get permissions for files. Thank you again, bgetchel!

Thank you very much for your answer! I managed to get into folder, but now I cannot delete the files. I had to do it in Safe Mode, because in "Normal Mode" I cannot get "Security" tab on the right-click. Even though I am pretty sure, that I am logged in as Administrator. I must confess, I am completely clueless, when it comes to advanced file management (permissions for files and folders). I set everything on "Allow" for folder permissions, but I still cannot delete the files; when I try to go to "Security" tab for a file, I get "You're not allowed...." and so on. So, I would very much appreciate a little more detailed instructions or maybe a link on the subject. Besides that, I still don't know what caused files/folders in lame3.97.zip to "disallow" themselves. I never experienced nothing even remotely like that before.

I have a serious problem with WindowsXP (sp1). Yesterday I tried to defragment the drive with Diskeeper (7.0). I went into ''Boot-time defragmentation'' and checked ''Run CHKDSK before defragmentation'' and ''Defragment the MFT'' (I did that before and no problems occured). Then I restarted the computer. After both processes were finished, the computer restarted. Just after it was supposed to start Windows (loading…), it restarted again. There was the screen with ''safe boot'', ''last configuration that worked'', and so on. I tried them all. None worked. Then I booted from WindowsXP cd, and went into the recovery console. I tried several options (fixmbr), but at last ''chkdsk'' worked. After that Windows started normally. First thing I noticed was (in Diskeeper), that ''reserved system space'' moved from beginning to the end of the disk. But that wasn't the end of it. Each time Windows starts, I get the following warnings and errors in the Event Viewer (Application): Event: Type: Warning User: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM Computer: POLARIS (name of my system) Source: Userenv Category: None Event ID: 1517 Description: Windows saved user POLARIS[my name] registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. In Control Panel/System/Advanced/User Profiles/Settings, there are two profiles: ''Account Unknown'' (602 KB) and POLARIS[my name] (48 MB). Status and Type are ''Local'' for both. But then it gets worse. I can't access any files or folders I moved or copied. For example: I have txt file, and I can open (change, rename..) it normally. But as I move it, I get the following message: ''Cannot open [file]'' Make sure a disk is in the drive you specified.'' And if I move directory: ''[directory] is not accesible. Access is denied.'' The Recycle Bin stopped working, too. If I move something there, it disappears forever. Please help!

Thank you for your help! I tried to run MFT defrag in DK again, but it didn't work (it didn't crach either, like before). I tiried all sorts of things. None worked. So I used the only remaining solution. After the reinstall I tried the MFT defrag again (!), but this time no problems occured. Nevertheless, I won't use DK MFT defragmentation anymore.

Configuration: Tbird 1.4 GHz ECS K7S5A (SiS735 chipset) 512 MB of ram Maxtor 6L040J2 (40GB, 7200rpm) GF2 pro 64MB WinXP with SP1, default Windows SiS IDE drivers DMA is on I ran HDTach 2.61, and everything else looks normal. Access time is about 12 ms, average read speed is little less than 35000 kps. But recently CPU utilization is unbelievably high: around 54%! This happened after I installed extra ram into my computer (I only had 256 MB before). Before that, CPU utilization was ''only'' around 10%. Otherwise computer works normally (games run much better with extra ram).

My configuration: TB 1.4 GHz ECS K7S5A (SiS735 chipset) Maxtor 6L040J2 (40GB 7200 rpm) (primary master) Teac CD-W540E (secondary master) Toshiba SD-M1612 (secondary slave) 256 MB ram DDR 2100 WinXP sp1 So, here's the thing. I've installed SiS's IDE Driver (you can find it on their page, it is ide202.zip from 10/28/2002 ( http://www.sis.com/support/driver/utility.htm) since it is supposed to be better then drives that come with WinXP. Installation went smoothly, everything installed OK, but performance was worse. SiSoft Sandra 2002 for example showed lower disk index. It was even worse with Toshiba. Let's see: If I try to copy a large file on a disk (cca- 700MB - a divx movie), Toshiba starts to behave erratically (tick, tick, tick...) like it is having trouble reading the cd. Reading is of course very slow. Usually this is happening for about 10 or 20 seconds or so, and then it starts to read cd normally. But here's the interesting thing: If I try to copy more files from Toshiba to disk (divx movie and subtitles for example) everything goes normal! No ''hiccups'' whatsoever. To summarize: If I copy just one large file to disk, there are problems. If I copy more files to disk (for example one large and more small ones) everything goes fine. In both cases I use the same cd, of course. This happens just with Toshiba, but not with Teac. I have naturally uninstalled the drivers, but the problem remains even with the old drivers (those that came with WinXP). Before I installed those drivers (ide202.zip), everything was OK. I tried everything: I even uninstalled ''SiS PCI IDE Controller'' from Device Manager so that Windows could install it again. Nothing works. What should I do except re-install Windows? Sorry about bad English. It is not my native tongue.

It is interesting, that I don't have such problems with Teac... BarryKNathan: Maybe. But I should say, that Toshiba is practically new (I bought in the summer). blakerwry: Well, I tried this on several different media (TDK, Acer, TraxData...), that were burnt on different burners. I know Nero CDSpeed very well. I test every single media that I burn with it. And none of the media that I tried, had problems with it. Even more: Toshiba has no problems with media, if I try them in Nero CDSpeed! Everything works fine. The tests (transfer rate, scan disk, CD quality test...) show no problems. It is only when copying one large file from Toshiba to disk, that causes problems.

One more thing: In Event Viewer/System I get a lot of Warnings: EventID: 51 Description: An error was detected on device DeviceCdRom1 during a paging operation.

Since two 60GXP 'Deathstars' died on me, I bought myself the new 40 gig D740X Maxtor drive (6L040J2), a couple of months ago. It worked fine for a while, but then something strange happened. I was watching a DivX movie (from HDD, not cd-rom), but suddenly the movie stopped and closed. I tried again and it closed again at the same place (in the movie). OK, something is wrong with the movie (not uncommon). So I went to my friend, who has the same copy of the exact movie, and his copy worked fine (on his computer). I ran Powermax utility (re-certification-something) and to my horror it found mistakes on the drive! It (the utility) also told me, that it can try to correct mistakes with I-don't-know-what (I was in shock, so I wasn't paying attention). I had to type YES with capital letters, and in a few seconds it was done. All the files were OK, except that movie, which had anomalies at the place the movie stopped before. But it didn't close anymore. I ran Powermax again the same day (re-certification), and everything was OK. I even run the burn-in test for a couple of hours. That was a week ago. I ran re-certification test almost every day since then (paranoia ), and it found no mistakes. Everything seems to be OK now. My question is: What was wrong with my drive at the time? Can it happen again? The drive is cooled, it runs at 30-35 degrees C. P.S.: Sorry about bad English. It's not my native tangue.

Well, I certainly learned a lot today. Thank you all very much! I do not believe, that there is a problem with my system. The drive is properly cooled (with http://www.sspring.com.tw/shdc-a.htm), and otherwise the system works fine. Besides that, the hard disks were making different problems. IBMs (that weren't cooled) 60GXP after a few months both started to make loud noise while spinning (at first I thought, that something's got caught in the proc fan ) and I just took them back (I had them one after another, of course). There is a different problem with Maxtor (see topic). The price for another hard disk and a raid controller is a little steep and I can't afford that at a present time unfortunately. I have ECS K7S5A board, which has SiS735 chipset on it. The IDE controller is SiS530, at least PowerMax says so. Where will your program be released (which site)? After reading your posts, it seems to me, that this thing is not as bad as I thought it was (I'm a little paranoid, as I said before ). So, I'm just gonna do, what Steel suggests: I'll check the drive regularly for a few months, and if everything goes well, I'll just forget about it.

Pradeep:I know that, of course... But on the other hand, except for my current computer and the ''fancy'' 7200rpm drives, I have never had ANY problems with hard drives. Never ever. I've never made backups. I did't have to. The 120 MB drive in my 386 still works. The drive in my 486 also. Not to mention Cyrix with 3.2 GB Seagate HDD. Still works at my friend's. My Celeron comp with 6.4 GB HDD still works in my father's office. No problems with any of these drives. Not a single bad sector in all those years. And now... this is the third drive in my current (Athlon) computer, that is making problems. It's fast, of course. The IBMs were, too. It's quiet (so were IBMs). For example, you can hear Seagate 3.2 GB drive across the appartment. So, there's a progress. But something's missing here.... I want to be able (as I was before) to trust my HDD with my data. To upload the data on the disk, and still find it there the next day. Intact. Is that too much to ask from the HDD manufacturers? Obviously. I apologize for being so melodramatic. But I just hate it, when manufacturers of storage products (I see that with burners also) put speed before reliability.

Thank you again, BarryKNathan! This is the second time you've helped me (the first time being the problem with my PlexWriter). Even though this answer isn't exactly what I wanted to hear... Well, there's nothing I can do. But still...How can I ever fully trust my HDD, if it can just destroy my data for no apparent reason? How can I be sure, that this won't happen again next week, next month...? Anyway, I hope you'll find time for your response you've mentioned at the end of your post.

First of all, thank you for your answers! Do you mean, there are bad sectors on the disk? I checked the HDD with ScanDisk (I just typed 'chkdsk'' in the Command Prompt) and it didn't found any bad sectors. This is really the main thing I want to know. Was it just a ''software thing'', or is there a physical error (=bad sectors) on the drive? How can I check my HDD for bad sectors? This would be easy, if I would be using just Windows 98. But it's a little more complicated than that. I have two OS's on the drive: Win98 (10 GB) and WinXP (30 GB), which is on NTFS. I partitioned my drive with Partition Magic 7 and for booting I am using System Commander. I was watching movie in WinXP. I told already, that I checked my HDD (just the WinXP partition - there was the error) with 'chkdsk' in Command Prompt and it showed no bad sectors. Is that reliable? How can I know for sure, that there are no bad sectors on the drive? I have already obtained another copy. That's not really the problem. The problem is, whether my brand new HDD contains bad sectors and/or has any other mistakes.

Recently I bought Maxtor D740X (6L040J2 - 40GB, 7200 rpm) HDD. Somebody told me about this program DTemp (http://www.private.peterlink.ru/tochinov/, that measures the temperature of the hard drive. I tried it and to my surprise the temperature was 45 degrees Celsius (the program's ''HDD critical temperature'' is at 41 degrees C by default!). Generally speaking, the temperature varies from 41 to 47 degrees C (I have a big tower). Is that normal? What's your experience?

Thank you very much, BarryKNathan! You are absolutely right. I was recording in TAO mode. The reason is simple. It was set as default in Nero Burning Rom (and, I guess, in WinOnCD, I was using before, also). And most importantly, I was told, there is no difference between TAO and DAO, when you're recording data CDs (only with audio CDs). I guess you learn something new every day... Thank you again!

I have an interesting problem with my PlexWriter PX-W8432T. Do you know ''Nero CD Speed'' (it comes with Nero Burning Rom)? There is a function in this program, that is called ''ScanDisc'' (Extra menu). It is used for CD error checking. It does that with ''File Test'' and ''Surface Scan'' (you probably know that already). And here's the problem. Today I was checking some of my CDs, and I noticed, that (with ''Surface Scan'') every CD that I've made with my Plextor (I bought it a few years ago), has an unredable (red) square at the end (probably lead-out, but I'm not sure). Except for the copied discs (that were made, for example with CloneCD or CD Copy (Nero)). Nevertheless, all CDs play normally. ‘’File Test’’ shows nothing, everything works normally. Programs, music, movies…etc….work fine. Even when there is only one file on the cd (for example divx), nothing’s wrong with it. So I checked some CDs, that weren’t recorded with my Plextor. Here, everything was all right, there was no ‘’ureadable suface’’. Can somebody please tell me, what is going on with my Plextor? Did you even heard of something like this before? Because I sure didn’t.
