  1. 700TB onto tape? Jeez, even with LTO5 that's an entire 500-tape library full before you've modified any data.

    My first question usually when tackling problems of this scale is, is all of it really neccessary? How much of it actually needs to be backed up every day?

    I totally Agree that Tape isnt the optimal solution(nor is it very flexible with that amount of data), but i can in no way endorse a solution to disk, if its in the same physical datacenter as the production data is stored.

    The point of my advice was more in line with.. get the data out of the datacenter for your backups, and if a extra datacenter is cost prohibtive, i suggest tape, to have the possibility to move it out.

    Ofcause disk based backup is a more sane solution when we are talking those kind of volumes, but if you just keep it in a rack next to your production data, your happy fellowed if the place is destroyed.

    Who knows what is possible from the limited amount of info :)

    Deduplication alone, will reduce the backup window, and recovery time by Alot. But is it fesible to do?

  2. Firdt of all we don't know it's reliable or compatible and second of all enterprise drives don't deserve inflated prices unless they deliver something of value for the increased price. A 25% price bump for some enterprise value is fine. That's what you'd pay for a platter drive. A 100+ % increase is foolishness. If Intel can sell these at that price more power to them. There are a lot of suckers in this world. ;)

    My reliable I merely ment the heightened amount of writes it allows compared to consumer ssd, I apologize that it could be misunderstood.

    Its direct competitors are the WDC Pulsar and samsung enterprise SSd not the vertex 3 maxiops or anything like that

  3. Assuming of course, you can't get the same reliability and iops from 6x100$ drives, which I'm willing to bet you can.

    Your assuming the drive is the expensive part of the equation.

    I recon manpower requirements for switching worn out drives outweigh the cost of the drive pretty fast.

    Yes I know raid is invented, but I also believe a drive with higher write lifetime is always better.

  4. Its more a question of personal opinion than anything else.

    I really don't see an alternative to tape based backup if you don't have an offsite backup solution, but I also strongly believe you should move the tapes away from the datacenter.

    It's a bit too many eggs in one basket.

    I'm not sure about data archival regulations, but I'm sure the company auditors would have some preferences.

    Backup to disk or San or tape for that matter is never safe if you keep it with your production data.

    Quantum fx. Makes the scalar i6000 who can handle upto 10 PB data.

    It's way out of my league to recommend anyhing for a backup solution I recon is above 1,000,000$ tho.

Oh, I just ran across an article about the OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 which is "suppose" to have 1.5GBps read and 1.2 GBps write... a little slower than the P320h but it only costs $700 for a 240GB drive... that seems like a better value than the P320h... and faster than the OCZ Vertex 3... with slightly higher costs... I can find the Vertex 3 for a little under $600...

    You cant really compare the two products.

    The micron is around 3 times faster in Straight transfer rates.

    But it also delivers 10 times the random IOPS than the Revodrive 3 X2 does.

    The micron will smoke everything besides the highend Fusion-io drives, which is its direct competitors.

    7500$ is a bargain really.

    Fusion-Io drives can easily cost 20.000-40.000$ depending on its size. (atleast with a HP badge on)

  6. Im afraid i misread your original post, and came with a recommendation that might be too expensive. (i thought it was business related)

    A standard LTO-4 or 5 drive, costs around 2000$.

    The main problem with lets say making the backup to a external harddisk, is that the rumor goes that the drives need to be exercised, to be sure the motor and plates will continue to run over the years. That isnt really an issue with a Tape solution.

  7. Since you havnt really specified what you mean by long term, I'm going to assume it's more than 5 years.

    Also since you haunt mentioned the volume of data nor if you need it to be online(easily available), I'm gonna assume it's slot and you do not need it to be online.

    The only sane choice for archival over a long period of time I still find is good ol tapes, and I'm going to recommend you buy a lot device. The tapes have an expected lifetime of between 15 and 30 years.

    There are some pitfalls I would like to share tho.

    Having experienced it myself I would suggest moving data to a newer generation, _before_ you aren't able to buy a drive that can read your tapes.

    I've had an situation where I had to recover some data off microDAT tapes, and it's kind of hard when the last drive was sold like 7-8 years ago.

    IF by any chance it's a smaller amount of data, say 1-5 TB I would probably just go with some sort of online storage like s3 or an online backup provider.

  8. Depending on the size of your backup, i would probably recommend some sort of online media like dropbox or amazon's S3 solution.

    In my company we moved our backup into the cloud(not any of the aforementioned, but a local danish backupcloud), simply because of ease of use, and pricing, updating hardware for backups every 3-5 years cost alot, plus you need software etc to handle your achival history.

  9. To me it sounds like a classic server vs storage guy battle.

    I've seen it a few times on Aix platform where I simply couldn't convice our Aix guy that doing metaluns would be just as Optimized for speed as handling several Luns via lvm.

    I am almost willing to bet that it's just wanting to stick with what you know that governed the decision.

    Raid 5 performance, looks very very interresting. If i ever decide to put some of these drives in some sort of cachecade or similar technology im gonna look at the p300, thats for sure.

    im wondering why they didnt launch it with SAS tho, but i suppose since they are compatible.... but is a 6gb/s SAS controller 6gb/s SATA compatible?

  11. Is a 3 year warranty considered standard for enterprise class storage?

    Normally the vendors try and push a 3 year warranty on their products because most companies write off their equipment investment over that period.

    For a nominal fee your able to purchase 5 years too, since some companies have a longer timeline for hardware replacement.

    Extended warranties are also an easy price squeeze when dongj battle with other vendors since better service is something you can sell for "free"

    Nope not yet, but im thinking im gonna do some experiementation over the weekend, on a vmware box, since i dont really have any hardware i can use for that kind of stuff barebones anymore.

    We run blades and SANs allready, but im thinking about building something for offsite storage, thats alot cheaper than the generic Enterprise SANs, since the reliability requirements wouldnt be as great (99.5% uptime would be acceptable, compared to 99.995% on equallogic)

  13. Anyone? Man, I miss the days of SR where you would get a reply to any post, stupid or other, within minutes. Damn. Well I'll keep working on this project and keep this thread updated on my progress.

    Personally i would prolly just go with one of the vendor boxes, in my case i would select equallogic, because i allready have 5 units in the server-room.

    They are easy to manage, the performance is good, and the tools are excellent.

    Their european support on Linux platforms are a bit lacking, but i know from experience (through escalated cases) that their US based 2nd level techs, are very very skilled.

  14. I generally am looking at Enterprise level ssd's.. and reviews are what i would call nonexistent on the interweb.

    Im wondering, if there are NDAs or the manufactors simply dont see the same reason to send out enterprise hardware to review sites, given the general audience of said sites (nerds with no cash ;-) )

    If SR gets an offer for review models of these pulsar units, i would be very interrested to see their performance characteristics. Especially since sequantial read/Write speeds are about as boring as watching grass grow.

  15. I gave up wireless in my home, years ago.

    The connections are too unstable, especially if you live in apartments with a high number of accesspoints nearby. i on my 54mbit i got speeds from 3 to 22mbit, but it kept swapping back and forth, and changing channels did nothing (i can see like 16 wireless lans from my laptop when im home)

    So my WHS, my PS3 and my PC and even my Popcornhour box are all connected via gigabit lan Through a DIR-655.

    Only thing i run wireless these days are my office laptop, when i take it home, oh.. and the ipad.
