    Shopping At Dell

Pardon me for asking, but what kind of Crack are you smoking HisMajestyTheKing It must be goood. My experience with both ibm, hp and dell tells me that of the three IBM comes last each and every time, in X86 machines anyhow. plus ibm is even more expensive than HP, and thats saying alot. Take the IBM 335 series as an example.. a 1U system, supporting 2 disks and two CPU's... fine enough i guess... but they decided to put the worst LSI Scsi controller onboard they can find... just rebuilding a 36GB mirror takes 1 1/2 - 2 hours! And management software for the servers.... IBM director.... please.. Impossible to setup, impossible to use.. Both insight manager(Hp), and IT assistant (dell) is way better. HP servers are the best, no doubt about it, dell a close second, and IBM... well i wont buy anymore of em, thats for sure. Darking

    Toyota, Gas Mileage & Hybrids

Try a modern turbo diesel. The ShiftTronic transmition in the Celica’s is just plain bad-ass awsome. The thing is, no one wants to pay $6k extray just for a trani... What has semi-automatic transmition to do with torque i might ask? Btw i recently owned a new Turbo diesel car, a Peugoet 206 HDI SX 3-door. Its Small, fast and fun to drive And its estimated 22km/l, 160km/h on the freeway gave me 16km/l.. 90 HP and 205NM of torque... yum yum Im sure a 5.7l chevy is louder and more "manly" but with the gasolin costing over 1USD a litre, it just aint fun Darking

    It has arrived!

well some of the newer ones have, the older SATA data connectors didnt, and fell off way to easily the new ones, that came with the 3ware controllers, sits hard and firm (i think WD invented the securelock thing), the SATA power connectors im pretty sure has the same problem, since they dont have the little locking mechanisme the data connectors have. well tje project is actually done, but i havnt had the time to make any more pictures than i allready have uploaded. but here are some pictures i found laying around: Rest can be seen at this url http://darking.nowhere.dk/pictures/StorageBox/ It basically makes _alot_ of noise, runs nice and cool, and has a 1000VA APC ups on it now. benchies can be seen in the above link too Darking

    modern AGP cards

As far as i recall 8x cards only support down to 4x AGP speed. Darking
  8. Raid 0 with 8 disks, somehow i couldnt get the two arrays striped, must been windows 2003 acting up Simple hardware Raid5 Software strip of two raid 5's... around 60% CPU usage when running atto Bigger cluster size set, dont know if that'll give me real performance advantages. Q's? 1) Whats best for me. i need to write really big files onto the harddrive (250gb files), go for the 64K cluster size? (backup exec bfc files.) 2) Its not 100% increasement, and i wonder why it kinda stops at 370MB read speed. Darking

    HighPoint 1820

i have a hard time finding out if it is a software or a hardware card (i assume we are talking about the raidcore?). The highpoint 1820 doesnt have an XOR engine, thats certain. Darking

    HighPoint 1820

allthough its Tom's hardware, this review is above his normal standard (in my eyes atleast). review of SCSI and SATA cards in Raid5 Looks like we got a new players, that highly outrates 3ware, both in speed and scalability. But its a prototype review of it (raidcore rdc 4000) Darking

HD recommendations for Win2K server RAID

3ware has in the past recommended maxtor drives, i know thats what i bought 16 of But im sure hitatchi and others work fine as well, the slow speeds of the WD should be fixed with a firmware release a while back Darking

    It has arrived!

SCSA, 3ware cards, generally have a array limit of 2TB, alltho the cards support a total disk capacity of 3TB. Unfortunately the R5Fusion engine, only works on the first raid 5 array, so i wouldnt be able to get anything out of it, since it would slow the performance to a halt Darking

8 disks pr array/controller. didnt buy the 12 port cards, because i would run into the 2TB array limit far too fast. Darking

    It has arrived!

Ill take some when i start assembling the whole case, prolly monday. It basically looks like this, alltho mine is a bit older model (and scratched!!) Its size is this. 710mm x 410mm x 655mm (T x B x H) and wieghs 50kg (100Lbs) with powersupply.. Pluuuuus, it gotz Wh33lz!!! Darking

    It has arrived!

yah i recieved it today, it looks sweet, just need to find a way to mount it in my case, gonna have to build something to set it on, or the cables will be almost too short to reach the motherboard.. And need to buy myselves 5 Y molex splitters, since the 10 on the PSU aint enough Darking

    It has arrived!

Well this is ment for a backup server, for backup to disk, i hardly think its a problem if i loose the powersupply for a couple of hours, or even days, it will be secured from powerloss and spikes by a 3000VA UPS. Why not SCSI... well cost is one part of it, another is i need storage.. and alot of it, our backup is 300 GB's a day, and i need _atleast_ 5 of those, it all adds up, plus some extra space available, aint a shame.. a Maxtor Atlas 10KIV 146.9GB costs 3 times as much as 200GB sata disk, and i would need almost twice the amount... it all adds up, and this project was ment from start, as a lowbudget solution, giving massive storage, and "good" performance. I have no doubt i could build or buy a "better" SCSI solution... but at what price?? 4 or 5 times as much.. I doubt very much, that for our needs its the way to go, if im wrong, that'll suck, but id' only have used 10-15K $, compared to buying a EMC or similar solution for 150-200K $ btw. I plan on using Windows 2003 server. and Veritas backup exec 9.0 Both ive tested to run very smoothly together. Darking

    It has arrived!

well as i only use 200gb disks my arrays wont be larger than 1.6 TB... or 1.4 if i run raid5 as i plan... and i can always run them striped under windows (raid 50), i dont believe theres an upper limit there ill reach anywho. Potentially i _could_ run a 4x 1.4TB = 5.6 TB... wich is pretty damn sweet... But i doubt it will come to that... 2.8TB will be enough for starters. Darking

    It has arrived!

Two maxtor Atlas IV 10K 36GB disks in raid1 for system. The sweet thing bout the case is that i can add another 5 drive cages, with 15 disk innit, giving a total of 33 disks, or whopping 6,6TB data storage Darking

    It has arrived!

i would too, execpt for one thing, if i need to utilize the maximum amount of disks in my JS2000 case, i need to use 3in2's since there are these slots of 4x 5.25", and then a case stabiliszer, then another 4x5.25", then a stabilizer and then another 4x5.25" in each side. Noise for me isnt really an issuse, its not like its gonna sit under my desk. as long as it provides good cooling, wich i dont think will be a problem, considering id'll have somthing like 14 80mm fans and two 120 mm fans, in my case. This pictures shows the intel 12x13" SSI sized motherboard, wich only fills up like 1/2 the hieght, 1/2 the depth and 1/100000th of the width Darking

    It has arrived!

mmmm More stuffs have arrived now... just waiting for the for the 660watt powersupply Pictures shows 6 x Noname disk cages, with 16 SATA disks inside, plus two 8506-8 Escalade controllers. The disk cages have 6 leds, first power, second fan alert, third temp alert, and 3 disk access leds. Simple drive cage. True SATA connectors baby!!, no molex here. Not so true SATA here two molex connectors, and 3 SATA data connectors. Questions: 1) Anybody got any idea who made my disk cages?? I cant find any info on the firm, either on the papers, packaging or anything. 2) Aint it Sweet!! Darking
