    Seagate Barracuda 7200.7

Any comment on this? I know the review says that similar performance should be expected, but has anyone verified it? Thanks.
  2. Can a MoBo with an onboard U320 port use a HD that is U160? Forgive the noob question, I know nothing about SCSI...
  3. Does the new Hitachi 7K250 drive have the command and queue feature they call "tag and seek"? Also has anyone used the 180GXP with the Pacific Digital DS4-100? (That’s the card that allows the 180GXP's to use tab and seek.) If so, what sort of performance gains are you seeing, if any. A guesstimate will suffice. Thanks.

    > But you were mistaken. Even though you thought I "didn't not possess a total understanding of the benefits of raid0" I never made any comment about RAID or RAID-0 that would have backed this belief up. > But its not a straight comparison of drives that are the same type. It was comparing drives that are drastically different physically and performance wise.

Well yeah, during game play there would be a lot of seeking for different textures and sound files. But at the start during the level load, you would see much faster load times. Plus most MP server’s don’t actually display the in game action or play any sounds.

Well you made an assumption about me, just like Picard did. You don't know me, just like he doesn't know you. I guess the problem was a difference of understanding in regards to the question. I just wanted to know info about the drives, and you interpreted that I was asking a more RAID related question. Either way my question has been answered. So thanks to everyone for their helpful input.

lol, it took me a second to figure that one out. Well mainly I’m thinking about the load times for maps/levels and whatnot. I know that sdbardwick's post made a reference to gaming, but it doesn’t say what aspect. If its talking about the time in between level loads, then yeah, you’re not going to see much change at all.

Man, you don't have to be rude. Yesterday you were telling me what you thought I did and did not know.

    >That’s just it; I know where RAID-0 has its advantages and disadvantages. I’m not asking how much better are 2 Maxtor's in raid-0, when compared to 1 Maxtor. Anytime that you put a couple drives into a RAID-0 config, its going to help performance. I wanted to know just how crappy or good the Maxtor's were. Obviously the 2 Maxtor’s are going to outperform a single Maxtor. But that wasn't the question. If I had asked to compare two 5 year old HD's in RAID-0 vs. a new WD Raptor, it wouldn't matter that the two drives were striped, they would get owned by the Raptor. The question was about overall performance. Not how much RAID-0 will help the two Maxtor’s. >It wouldn't have been "it depends". If the question were a single drive vs. a pair of stripped drives there is no question that the stripped ones would outperform the single drive. Weather or not my application will utilize this added performance is another question all together. >Again, it doesn’t matter. The question was simple and straight forward. So are you recommending the two Maxtor’s? Out of curiosity, which would be better for a server type application? Something like a Internet Connection Sharing server that’s also hosting Multiplayer Games.

    >Oh I'm not expert, I never claimed to be. >RAID is a factor, but I wasn’t asking about the RAID aspect. I was asking about the HD aspect I did look at the reviews, but I wanted to know just how much better the WD was on its own, by comparison to two Maxtor’s in RAID-0. They person who is buying the hardware had a set amount he wanted to spend. Two Maxtor 30's were within that amount, but 2 WD's weren't. So with the advice you guys gave me earlier I picked him up a single WD 40 w/8MB cache. >I never said, because it did not matter. It's always a mistake to make any assumption... Even if it was for a typical user, the question and answer would have been the same.

Oh yeah I know, RAID-0 is great. One of the server's is actually running a RAID-3 array. High performance and parity. Thanks Hunter, but again, I'm not asking about "if" I should use RAID. Basically I just wanted to know how good the Maxtor's are by comparison to the WD's. So from the relevant feedback I've received I decided to go with the a couple WD's. The workstation is already running Pro Tools, which is what they are running at the studio. Makes it really easy to take work back and forth. By comparison, those toys are all wrong for the type of work that’s being done. But they definitely have their usefulness.

Excuse me? I have 2 servers and my workstation all with different types of arrays. Why do you think that I don't know what I’m talking about? I've been working with RAID for many years now. My question was about which would give me better performance when comparing different makes of HD's. I never asked any questions about RAID. I just wanted to know which setup would give me better performance. Obviously the biggest factor is the HD's themselves. No one asked me what I was using it for. This particular array is going into a small workstation that’s going to be used for multi-track audio editing.

Thanks, but I am already very well versed in the benefits and capabilities of RAID. I was just looking for info on the drives themselves.

What about the WD w/8MB cache vs. the Seagate Cuda IV in a 2 drive RAID-0 array?

I'd also like th throw the Seagate Cuda 40GB into the mix. If the Maxtors really aren't a good option I will still probably go with 2 drives in a striped config. In that case, which would be better? The WD's or the seagate?
