  1. for a dvd writer say LG 4082 on an external enclosure attached to a notebook for a 5 Gb video file written by a DVD writer 1) how much more is USB 1.1 more prone to error /stability issues as compared to USb 2.0 or firewire 2) wouls you say that USB 1.1 is just aabout 10% slower than USB2.0 and fire wire when writing a 5 Gb file . 3) Is firewire the most stable in terms of least errors as compared to USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 4) is a pentium 3 machine 1.2 GHZ with 256 Mb PC 133 Ram pose any writing or any probelems in writing a 5gb file on a DVD
  2. among writers that write RAM , I understand that 2 writers I can look at PAnasonic 9852 or LG 4082 ' 1) have there been any problems or writing errors with mounting either of the 2 machines on a external enclosure ? a) I understand that the time of analysing , ripping, writing is only about 10% different whether it is an external drive or internal writing drive 2) any disadvantages of panasonic 9852 that does not write R + ? 3) I seem to favour panasonic since it is the originator of RAM drives.
  3. may I check on the difference in transfer time of external DVD RW writer vs the internal DVD writers for Time taken to burn the following data for External vs Internal DVD RW writer 1) 5Gb data ( video ) 2) 500 Mb data 3) 1 gb data What is a few top DVD writers I should be looking at for all formats including DVD RAM ?

    best HDD for HTPC ?

    HI thanks for the reply Can somebody enlighten what is doing filters on avi files ? 1) If I need a total of 120 Gb space, guaging from my application ( The high end test below is applicable ) a) Any thoughts..maxtor performs best in the high end test , ( I can never understand why it is not suitable at high workloads ? ) I am not sure what how much better is it with Maxtor at 42.3 and IBM 120GXP at 32.6 ( look at the data I extracted from the performance data base for both the high end test and idle noise ) 2) On idle noise, maxtor again emerges as one which is quietest, athough I am not sure what how much noisier with WD 120 JB at 47.3 compared to maxtor at 42.0 a) I am just wandering which is the most stable drive with less chance of having bad sectors and not easily going into failure. ZD High-End Disk WinMark 99 in MB/Sec Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 [8MB, 80GB/plat] (160 GB ATA-133) - 44.9 | Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 [8MB, 60GB/plat] (160 GB ATA-133) - 42.3 | IBM Deskstar 180GXP 8 MB (180 GB ATA-100) - 39.2 | Western Digital Caviar WD2000JB (200 GB ATA-100) - 36.9 | Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 (160 GB SATA) - 36.7 | Western Digital Caviar WD800JB (80.0GB ATA-100) - 35.0 | Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB (120 GB ATA-100) - 34.9 | Western Digital Caviar WD1000BB-SE (100 GB ATA-100) - 33.4 | IBM Deskstar 120GXP (120 GB ATA-100) - 32.6 | IBM Deskstar 60GXP (60.0 GB ATA-100) - 29.1 | Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 (160 GB ATA-100) - 28.1 | Western Digital Caviar WD1000BB (100 GB ATA-100) - 28.0 IDLE NOISE Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 (160 GB ATA-100) - 39.9 | IBM Deskstar 180GXP 8 MB (180 GB ATA-100) - 40.1 | Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 [8MB, 80GB/plat] (160 GB ATA-133) - 41.0 | Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 [8MB, 60GB/plat] (160 GB ATA-133) - 42.1 | Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 [8MB, 68GB/plat] (160 GB ATA-133) - 44.5 | Western Digital Caviar WD800JB (80.0GB ATA-100) - 45.0 | IBM Deskstar 120GXP (120 GB ATA-100) - 45.8 | IBM Deskstar 60GXP (60.0 GB ATA-100) - 45.9 | Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB (120 GB ATA-100) - 47.3 |
  5. can I know if a separate 80 Gb and 40 Gb ( 2 drives) would be noisier than a single 120 Gb ?? a) there should be no difference in performance I am using for HTPC ... BUt I heard there are usually more problems with trying to hook up 2 drives instead of just 1 It appears that chances of 2 drives failing is as equal to 1 drive failing ??

    best HDD for HTPC ?

to add on to earlier post I will go for a drive with 8 Mb cache ,7200 RPM To elaborate on reliability, the most stable drive with less chance of having bad sectors and not easily going into failure.

    best HDD for HTPC ?

Hi I need a 120 Gb Hard drive for applications such as playing back 5 Gb MPEG 2/DVD files from hard disk , HTPC applications like FFdshow, Theatre tek , D scaler, Powerstrip, and very often video recording , and rendering from AVI to MPEG 2 (Very much the test ZD High-End Disk WinMark 99 in MB/Sec ? ) QUESTION Which would be the best drive in terms of 1) the applications required , 2) reliability 3) high, mutiple tasking workloads, and 4) Noise level . Maxtor Diamond plus 9 seems to fit all the criteria , but Maxtor does not seem to be suitable at high workloads ??

    Seagate Barracuda ATA V

I understand that Seagate is the quietest drive around AN idea if the newest 7200.7 is able to match up to performance in terms of performance for applications such as playing back 5 Gb MPEG 2/DVD files from hard disk , HTPC applications like FFdshow, Theatre tek , D scaler, Powerstrip, and less often video editing
