    A "must-read".....

nuclear waste will not be problem in future. scientist in ITER project are trying to "burn" this radioactive waste from nuclear plants and transform it to harmless helium via next nuclear reaction....of course, extra energy is only secondary benefit here they say, that it will be possible in next 30 years

    Defragging Ntfs Under Xp?

ad 1) NO. afaik win2k/XP read/write data in 64kB blocks no matter how large the clusters are. 8kB cluster size may slightly improve performance (very slightly and maybe only hypotheticaly) because there will be only 1/2 of clusters (vs 4kB) and thus MFT will be about 1/2 smaller.

Smart Report - Should I Rma?

SMART is fine. did you try another power supply, or another power connector ?
  6. in RAID0 probably no (or it will be the same), but two single 7k250´s will be faster then 37GB Raptor...
  7. How can you tell that TCQ is being used when enabled? That's the trick - "enabled" is not the same as "being used". i didnt write that i am using CQ, but that i can enable/disable CQ in options... the difference in sandra could be because of buggy drivers maybe ?!?
  8. Hi guys, i have Promise fasttrak 150tx2+ pci controller and i can disable tagged queuing i options of my hitachi 7k250 PATA drive. i didnt run benchmarks yet, but there seems to be little difference in random read/write in Sandra (yes, i know, but it was the only SW i could run). i can post here images of how does the option in win2k looks like if you wanna.
  9. Hi all !!! i own two Hitachi 7k250 PATA 8mb cache 160gb. I had overclocked barton, so temperature in my case was about 40 C (maybe little more). I realized that i do not need so powerful CPU, so i put him on default settings, and that cause temperature to fall to 34 C. AND MY DRIVES NOW DO NOT MAKE MORE SELFTESTING SOUNDS !!! i was really surprised by that, so i overclocked my barton, and selftesting was here again... i put barton on default and drives are again quiet as tomb. so result is, that cat maowing and sawmill sound is probably done only if temperature is above some level (maybe 40C ?!?)

Where do you have this option? hmm i will try to translate in device manager - disk drives - there is something like IC35L180AVV207-1 SCSI drive (my 180gb 180gxp) or HDS722516VLAT80 SCSI drive (my 7k250 160gb with 8mb cache)...so right click on one of these - properties and there are four options (normal IDE drives has only three - generic, disk properties and driver)...i have also a device properties option here...where i can check two options: 1) "Do not shuffle data for the drive (Tagged Command Queuing)" 2) "Do not use write cache (may slowdown drive a lot)". i do not know if there is any performance gain, i only know that this option is here i do not use english windows, so everything is translation from my (czech) windows...sorry for that

nice to use that in case of blackout
  14. Hi. I have Promise FastTrak 150 TX2 Plus (2xSATA, 1XIDE). i have newest drivers ( and my OS is Windows 2000 SP4. My primary hard drive is Hitachi 7K250 160GB 8MB cache IDE and as slave there is IBM 180GXP 180GB 8MB cache. both drives are connected to promise controller. And problem ? poor write performance - both of them are lazy... Example - copy of 700mb file takes more than 1 minute !!! even my friend with old Seagate ATA V has better results !!! I read FAQ about SCSI write perfromance and realized, that it may help me, BUT: 1) i tried dskcache.exe but it write me, that "Error getting Write Cache value. (1117) The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.". on MS web page there is written that my drive probably don´t know appropriate SCSi command (drives are shown as SCSI disk in system... ). 2) so i search Promise web site and i downlaoded theirs manual, where is written something about cacheconfig.exe program. so i downloaded that but it said me that write-back cache is enabled, so maximal performance is enabled... anyone can help me ? anyone uses promise fastTrak 150TX2 plus with Win2k or XP ? or should I "defenestrate" my controller ? i supposed that promise controllers are high-quality....maybe not ?

  16. Hi. Soon, I will be 21 years old and i think i need some good electric razor, because my old one is dying So I tried to ask my friends and as a result, I think that best buy is something like Philips is offering. It looks good and my friends told me, that they ARE good. So questions: 1) What electric razor do you use ? 2) Do you think that my choice is good ? 3) If not, what do you think is best ? Thanks for your replies. ...and sorry for my English .

    Hitachi Deskstar 7K250

Good question. I don't think they didn't hear it Anyways, after a month the noise isn't bothering me anymore. If one of my friends come over and the drive makes the noise they just laugh. i think that it is possible that they maybe didn´t hear it. my 7k250 didn´t make the noise when it was brand new. it starts after maybe one month...
  18. does anybody know something about this ones ? http://www.hgst.com/portal/site/hgst/?epi_...fa0466460e4f0a0 i am surprised that hitachi didn´t make official announcement and that nobody here talk about it

    Hitachi Endurastar J4K20/N4K20

aaahhh precious answers as usually... i think that there isn´t any other manufacturer with product like that... so if it isn´t lucrative market, why is Hitachi selling something like that ?!? sorry for smilies, i like them a lot btw: something cross my mind - maybe it is because Hitachi is big company, which make digital cameras etc - and i might be pretty good idea to insert HDD into this piece of "electronics" ?!?

    Electric razor Suggestions

it looks like i started small flamewar about that thanx for your answers. i have VERY sensitive skin (unfortunately) and i tried many razors - I tried Wilkinson Sword protector 3D (something like Mach3D Turbo) and i wasn´t happy with that. It was cheaper than Mach3d, but i think that there isn´t difference in reaction of my skin i tried electric razor from Braun (unfortunately some cheap model ) and my skin react normally, but it was very difficult to shave all my face "corners" so i thought that if i would buy Philips/Norelco, i will be happy - my skin will react normally and i will be able to shave "all corners" so i will probably buy Norelco Quadra Action (thx to e_dawg !).
  21. 1) is it doing that exactly at the same time ? e.g. my 7k250 does it one time per day, exactly 7.46 P.M. 2) when and where was the drive produced ? if it was produced before april 2002, it may need firmware upgrade (afaik).

    Hitachi Deskstar 7K250

    Hitachi Deskstar 7K250

my 160GB 8MB cache PATA 7k250 do not make any noise like my old 180GXP 180GB... no selftesting, no strange sounds every 10minutes...
  24. 1) can you tell me why is xp rating joke ? i think that e.g. xp2400+ is comparable to pIV 2.4GHz...so where is the joke ??? 2) Have you ever seen any benchmark with pIV with HT enabled and with HT disabled ? in normal use of course...no syntethic benchmarks Results with HT disabled were better then with HT enabled
