  1. Hello, Over the past month, I've seen a variety of System events (XP Pro), starting with Event 51 paging errors on my system drive (Maxtor Atlas IV, 36GB). I've also seen other errors, summarized below, and I've had some system lock-ups while running Photoshop. These lock-ups normally take the form of a frozen mouse pointer. I'm still able to navigate with the keyboard when this happens, so I haven't lost any work—yet. The most serious episode resulted in a BSOD. The corresponding Events (50 & 57) were {Delayed Write Failed} and {system failed to flush data to the transaction log}. I don't have my system configured to save dmp files, so no other info about the crash is available. The odd thing is that I can go several days with no bad behavior from my computer. Then, about the time that I think the gremlins have left... BAM. As far as diagnostics go, Chkdsk did find some file system errors on my system drive. No bad sectors were reported after a surface scan and no SMART thresholds have been exceeded. Maxtor's SCSIMax diagnostic failed to complete (Divide Error). I have rebuilt the Page file. MemTest 86+ was run for 11 hours with no reported errors. I guess I don't understand a paging error for a ROM drive... Any ideas? Can this be anything other than a failing drive?

    HDD Magic?

Sorry, no confusion here. I am making a big deal about it because it's my data, not yours. This is a new system. The Seagate backup disk is new and has very little on it (8 folders, to be exact). The Ghost image was created only a few days ago to a specific folder on that drive. Shortcuts were created to that folder. At some point, the folder was NOT visible to the OS or Ghost (accessing the drive directly) or via the shortcuts to that folder. There were a couple of other folders that pulled the vanishing/reappearing act as well. I am concentrating on the Ghost folder because it has the highest priority. I was looking here for an answer because this is Storage Review. I guess it's time to broaden my search.

No, the scenario you describe is not what happened. The Ghost image did not appear on the drive where it was created (it was never moved anywhere else). Further, shortcuts to that image failed to find it while it was "missing". The next day, the image was back and the shortcuts worked. I don't like this at all and I wish someone could explain it.
  4. The 29160N in is an ultra 160 adaptor, therefore no setting for 320 will be available. Further, I assume that you have the card plugged into a 32bit PCI 33MHz slot which will limit your data transfer to below the 132MBs theoretical limit. Since I don't know what else you have sharing the PCI bus in your computer, I have no idea if 40MBs is a good number or not, but it does seem a bit low. Just don't expect to see anything near 160MBs.

    HDD Magic?

Last night, I noticed some files absent from my bkup disk (Seagate 7200.9, 160G SATA). Primarily, my latest Ghost image was gone. Thinking that I must have deleted it by mistake, I made a new one. This morning, after a shutdown and restart, the missing image was back along with a couple of other folders I had forgotten about. Seatools and chkdsk report no errors. What can make files disappear and then reappear?
  6. I have been using a 68 pin Maxtor Atlas IV 36G 10,000 RPM drive and an Adaptec 19160N host adaptor for about 2 years, both installed with factory defaults as they came out of the box. Now I want the Atlas to become my boot drive in a new system, but I am confused about the jumper settings. The first question concerns the SCSI ID. At boot, the controller says it is device ID6. However, there are NO jumpers on any of the ID pins and the documentation seems to say that this should equal ID0. Does the drive have to be ID0 to be used for a boot device, and if so, how do I make it happen? Second, the Atlas came from the factory with a jumper installed on the WIDE NO pins, limiting it to Narrow mode (this was a surprise). Since I am using a Ultra 160 controller on a 32 bit PCI bus, should I leave it as is or should I remove the jumper to enable Wide mode? Thanks.
  7. No reason at all unless one cares about a 5 year warranty. Regarding point 2 above, are you saying that TLER for this drive can in fact be disabled?
  8. It would depend on the level of error correction offered by the nForce chip in a RAID environment. I don't know how easily one could find an answer to that. It would be very helpful if WD would publish a list of RAID controllers compatible with their drives.
  9. Addendum to previous post: So, the answer is short on details and leaves one wondering. I have read elsewhere that TLER induced errors are only an issue in a high I/O scenario and that the average desktop would not suffer any ill effects. However, being a coward at heart, I opted to order the KD from ZipZoomFly for $220, free 2day shipping. I also ordered the 160G (single platter) version of the Seagate 7000.9 from NewEgg. Should make an interesting pair.
  10. Here's the answer from WD re using the YR in a non-RAID config on a RAID enabled controller: Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. I would not suggest using a RAID edition drive in a non Raid environment. I would suggest using the WD4000KD. Please see the specifications below. Title: Specifications for the 400GB Caviar SE16 Serial ATA hard drive (model WD4000KD) URL: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/ph...ated=1127843454 Sincerely, Dallas L Western Digital Service and Support http://support.wdc.com
  11. Does this apply if the drive is used on a RAID capable controller (nForce4), but not utilized in a RAID configuration? I would like to use one of these drives as a storage disk in a graphics workstation (Tyan K8E, Athlon X2 4400+), but I don't want to risk data corruption/integrity. Thanks.
