I have 3 identical brand new WD Velocity Raptor 10,000 rpm HD's that I bought for use in a newly built high end tower computer, and I would like to experiment with RAID. The WD Support told me that these drives can not be used for RAID because they are not strict enough on the speed sync or something like that, and one will eventually drop out. They tried to sell me the red label drives that cost well over $250 each that is certified for use with RAID. I am reading conflicting articles that mention using the WD Velocity Raptor HD's.
My 1st question is: "Can these WD Velocity Raptor 10,000 RPM hard drives be used reliably in a RAID Configuration such as RAID 0 or RAID1 or RAID 5?"
I also have 2 identical brand new smaller capacity SSD drives. Without looking, I believe they were Intel SSD's. I bought all of this equipment about 4 years ago and I am just getting it out of storage since I moved during my PC build project.
My 2nd question is: "Can I use these SSD's in RAID 0, Raid 1, or Raid 5 reliably or does it require special SSD Drives?" I am mainly interested in speed and might be interested in redundancy if it does not affect performance greatly, depending on the trade-off considerations. Although I am well experienced in PC maintenance, I am new to building a RAID array.
Thank you for replying to my questions.
