  1. None of the drives were clicking or making any suspicious noises. All drives were HGST/Hitachi Travelstar 5k1000. Is Hitachi known for doing what you said? Re-purposing parameter 192 of its HDDs?
  2. I got a new laptop and every time I put a new HDD into it, the Power-Off_Retract_Count in SMART increases around 100 000 every minute, ending up in several millions a day. Trier three disks already. For example, here are the SMART results of a brand new sealed disk I mounted this morning. It started from Power-Off_Retract_Count 0. These are results couple of minutes apart.     Got the replacement drive.     Well... I run the Short Test from the tool you linked to. I understand this is just a regular SMART short test which I can run from any SMART software, not just this HGST tool, right? Anyway, it passed in both cathegories (surface and something else). But I did another checek on SMART values and here it is how it looks after copying 500GB to the drive: As you can see, the number of Reported Uncorrectable is now twice as high as just few hours ago. What do you think?
  7. I bought a new HDD HGST Travelstar Z5K1000 HTS541010A7E630 It was bought from a computer store website and In the description it was sold as New but "after tests", henc the discounted price. Obviously, frist thing I did was check its SMART values: Check out the highlighted value... On one hand, this value is referenced to in the web as one of 5 most serious disk failure predictors. On the other hand, though... This computer chain store has hundreds of those drives "after tests" throughout the country, so I an inclined to guess that every one of them is like mine - in fact new (also confirmed by Power On Time, among other things), but after some "tests" and this extremly high property 187, even if not a glitch, has no impact on the disk itself, considering the remaining SMART values. But this is just a wild guess and I would appreciate your feedback.
