I am considering the Seagate 2TB and 3TB 7200RPM drives, (ST2000DM001)($100), (ST3000DM001)($125), and the Seagate 1TB and 2TB SSHD, (ST1000DX001)($90), (ST2000DX001)($125); or equivalent products.
Are these drives compatible with the SATA 1.5Gbit/s controller? Specifically the VIA VT8237. The drivers are generic Windows 8 drivers as this product is not supported by VIA for Windows 8.
I have heard that more platters can mean a significantly higher chance of hardware failure. Is this something I should be worried about with these drives?
How is the noise on these drives?
Because I can not get a SSD for my current system, these drives are being considered for use as system drives as well as storage drives. In a few years I will build a new system and at that time these drives will become just storage drives. Because of that I thought it makes sense to buy a 3TB drive instead of a 2TB or 1TB drive. On the other hand, I could buy a 1TB drive for 1/2 the price of a 3TB drive, and then in a few years see what I can get for the other 1/2 of the price I would have paid now.
Thank you very much.
