HGST portables are some of the best we've tested. Per your other question they'll last for many years.

For external use, which usually is what, backup? Holding your movie collection? That sorta thing?

Just about anything will be fine.

As far as I know, Toshiba 2.5" drives are made by Toshiba. My personal experience with 2.5" Toshiba drives is not really good, but that could be just me. They have 3.5" drives, which are made by Hitachi (may have different firmwares than the original Hitachi drives).

HGST Touro Mobile Pro 1TB is actually better than the one you've linked to, which is a 5400rpm drive and not that fast (or you meant something else by "best" :)). HGST Touro Mobile Pro 1TB is supposed to have a HGST Travelstar 7K1000 inside.
