HGST is announcing its new Travelstar 5K1500 which is the first 9.5mm, 1.5TB HDD to reach the market and is designed primarily for OEMs to install in their higher-end notebook computer offerings. The drive uses three platters to achieve this capacity, while others in the market have yet to go that route.

400g operational shock is good so this might become a standard practice? Might we see 4-platter 12.5mm laptop drives? Imagine with future 750GB platters you could have 3TB. Of course I'd always stick with 7200RPM drives or hybrid drives and the Travelstar 7k1000 is out

Heck can someone else other than WD do a 2.5" 2TB drive already? I'd love to see some competition for 2.5" 2TB USB 3.0 externals...

WD uses 15 mm height for its 4 platters in the 2.5" 2 TB. With this technique HGST might be able to squeeze a fifth platter in there.. :D
I certainly like this option!
