Anybody knows why this model is so "secret"?
Hard to find almost anything about it...
Would be perfect to our Thecus N7700; near line quality 5 years warranty etc...

It was released in December of 2010. We did a review of the subsequent 5K4000 here -

Secret in that way, that very few stores sell it (only in UK in Europe) and there's no reviews anywhere.
Also Thecus, or QNAP haven't added this to their supported models list.
Thecus' support told me that they can't get test version from HGST's test pool.

This is ULTRASTAR.
And 5K4000 ≠ 5K3000.
I believe it was announced late last year and became available in March.
And maybe you reviewed 5K4000 Deskstar in March 2012, but not 1.5 years after it was released?

Hah, my bad.

I will say, we've had a harder time getting units from Hitachi, I think there are some supply issues still at hand depending on the model and capacity.

Hitachi drives, not just that one in particular, are difficult to get here in the UK.

I did manage to get a 7K1000.D 1TB for my PVR - I knoew it'd be fast and cool running. It was expensive, but it's a very nice drive, and so far has coped with 24/7 running in the PVR for over a year, and runs ice cold.

At this time UK is the ONLY place in Europe to get those 3TB Ultrastars...
Ordered one for test drive from Stuff-UK...

Hey Toke Lahti

I'm considering purchasing this drive, any feedback? It seems to be incredibly cheap for an enterprise 247 Hitachi Ultrastar.
