I've been looking for an external hard drive and found the review for WD My Passport Edge for Mac and for PC.

I'm a PC user, but i really like aluminum case on the Mac version. I'm not really that much into hardware/software, but I was wondering if it is possible to buy the Mac version, reformat it to NTFS (it's FAT32 from new AFAIK) and then download the backup software for PC (since the backup software on the hard drive is for Mac)?

Thanks in advance

Reformat, yes. Redownload software, not sure (but probably?).

You should be able to reformat the drive in Windows' Disk Management.

WD has some guides:
ow to partition and format a WD drive on Windows (8, 7, Vista, XP) and Mac OSX(id:3865/)

As for their backup software( WD SmartWare ), try their downloads sections and see if the software install:

If the software doesn't, there are other backup software that will work(free and paid).
