Late last month LSI released a new SAS/SATA 6.0Gbps RAID card; the MegaRAID 9265-8i. Built as an update to the MegaRAID 9260-8i, the 9265 brings a dual-core 800MHz processor and 512MB or 1GB DDR3 options all targeting faster speeds that the latest generation of SSDs demand. Today we give our first look on this new card and see how well it performs with four 250GB Intel SSD 510s in RAID0.

very interesting - even if I'd expected an greater overall difference between the new and the "old" one...

also very informative would be a comparison with really fast drives (vertex 3) plugged to other 6Gbs+PCIe2.0 Controllers like Arcea's 1880 or the new Adaptec 6805...

Best regards

I'm curious, but since I was unable to achieve any of their previously-claimed performance levels with a 9260-4i for large random reads, I'm wary. I think I will try an Adaptec 6805 first as soon as I can get my hands on one. . . and if that fails to perform, then I'd check out a 9265.

What do you guys think of the web UI between the ARC-1880i, Adaptec 6805, and 9265-8i (or better yet the 9280-8i or similar)... has anyone here used all three?

I'm a bit behind here, especially on my Areca stuff. :(

Did you fail to mention that it has 8 internal SATA connectors?
No where did I see a pic or description of the how to connect SSD drives to this card?
I assume there are SATA connectors on the card.
But WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO GUESS.

Please get better reviewers or train the ones you have.

Its a first look, calm down a bit... :)

We will be going into much heavier detail in the full review, including installation shots, configuration options, user interface shots, etc.

LSI RAID cards use mini-SAS connectors that split off to connect 4 SAS/SATA devices.

I'm not sure RAID 0 was ever likely to stress either controller much. Something with parity, like RAID 5 or 50, might show up the differences better. And yes, more drives would help, though good luck in getting Intel to send you another 4 drives!
If I'm wrong, please tell me why. I'm trying to help, but I'm here to learn, too.

Well we hope to have 8 of something really fast before the end of the week. We will see how far that goes though.

8x C300 256GB is the only option I can think of that makes you able to push the limits of the 9265
-8x C300 256 x ~60Kiops 450-480K iops best case
-8x X25M 160 x ~40Kiops 300-320K iops best case
-SF-1XXX can't deliver on reads (~30K) but is huge on writes

Anyways, 8 drives would have been a great show.

Any ETA on the 8-drive tests? Also, can you do RAID5 as well as RAID0? Thanks!
