The German Website Hartware.net published the first details about the SpinPoint F2. It may have 500 Gbyte Platter because the top product will have 1.5 Tbyte (3 Platter). It could be out in 2008.

Looking at how long it took Samsung to announce the F1 and actually bring it to market, I'm thinking this won't be arriving any time in our lifetimes ;)

There was an article published on a ziff davis chinese website a month ago when Samsung made the announcement of a 1.5TB drive in 2008.

That article clearly stated twice that the 1.5TB drive would be 4 platters..

This would mean..

1500GB = 4x 375GB/platter

Expect 1.5TB & 2TB 3.5-inch hard disks sooner than later: by 2008. And not only from Samsung, but also other manufacturers. Competition is good.

2TB by 2008? I'm having hard time believing that.

Why? Samsung's 1TB offering is a 3 platter design. Presumably, Hitachi and the others are working on catching up to and exceeding that areal density.

Hitachi has a penchant for pushing 5 platter drives out the door, so if they can get their platter density up to the 400GB mark, or bust out a 6 platter monster at current 334GB levels, they could do it.
Samsung could probably do that now, but I don't think I'd want such a drive right now. Better to wait for denser platters.

The Samsung F1 1TB platters are thicker than usual platters, or at least according to Tomshardware, and thus it's mentioned that it's not feasible to simply stick in even a fourth one in there, let alone 5.

If you read StoX's message carefully, especially bold words, his post says that there will be at least two other manufacturers, who will provide 2TB in addition to Samsung. That means three manufacturers will have 2TB hard drives on the market during 2008. I find it hard to believe. I don't think there will be even one manufacturer which will sell 2TB hard drives in 2008. The highest data density of other manufacturers than Samsung is currently 250GB per platter. That means that either Hitachi will be able to produce 400GB per platter, or Seagate 500GB per platter and it's not gonna happen that soon. Maybe a paper release in 2008, but not real availability.
