Seagate's latest 15K RPM screamer isn't a Cheetah, but rather a diminutive 2.5 inch Savvio cranked up to rotate at the highest of speeds. Join StorageReview as we take a look at the latest arrival in the transition to a 2.5" enterprise market: The Savvio 15K.1.

The discussion link in the end of the article points to the Barracuda ES review discussion, not this thread. Just FYI. Anyway, great article.

Lowest Real-Time Price (750 GB): Coming Soon

I'd be surprised if you'll ever get a price on a 750 GB version of this drive!

Very interesting reading, especially regarding power consumption!

Apart from more spindles per rack for SANs and so on, this form factor allows more array flexibility for smaller form factor servers. 1U can easily accommodate 6 of these plus an optical drive, and blades can hold more drives as well. Gone are the days when 1U meant RAID 1 or no redundancy.
If I'm wrong, please tell me why. I'm trying to help, but I'm here to learn, too.
See my profile for PC specs. I do not practise what I preach.

Exactly, this means 1U + RAID5 becomes a reality for servers. Increased density for NAS sounds good too. And the low power dissipation means no headaches about cooling.
What i want to see now is racks and hot swap disk cases using this form factor, most are meant for 3.5". A Tyan barebone rack ready for 2.5" SAS hotswap array would be great :)

Supermicro has been selling hotswap SAS racks for this form factor for about a year. For example the CSE-M28E1 holds 8 2.5" SAS disks (or SATA) disks.
