LONDON, England (AP) -- A track based on a cell phone ring tone famed for its ability to infuriate listeners topped Britain's singles charts on Sunday, beating the new track from Coldplay to the No. 1 spot.

"Crazy Frog Axel F," inspired by a ring tone based on the sound of a man imitating revving mopeds, was the highest-selling single in the list compiled by The Official UK Charts Company.

The chart takes into account sales of CD singles and downloads.

"Crazy Frog Axel F" is the first cell phone ring tone to cross into mainstream music charts, said Gennaro Castaldo, a spokesman for HMV, the British music retailing chain.

The track is a reworking of "Axel F," Harold Faltermeyer's theme to the "Beverly Hills Cop" films.

The critically acclaimed new single by Coldplay, "Speed of Sound," placed second in the British charts.

"Crazy Frog Axel F" replaced Oasis tune "Lyla" as the No. 1 hit. The weekly singles chart, which has been released since 1952, is based on sales at 5,600 retail shops across Britain.

The Official UK Charts Company did not say how many copies of "Crazy Frog Axel F" were sold or downloaded, but earlier in the week Castaldo said it was outselling the new Coldplay track by four to one.

The "Crazy Frog" ring tone has grown hugely in popularity among young cell phone users in Europe in recent months.

Just noticed something else. Does that appear to be a penis the frog has in the video?

Take it as a sign of the apocalypse. It fits the current mindset: Paris Hilton, George Bush, Lidsay Lohan, Trump, Britney & Kevin Federline, & a frog with a useless-sized dick at No.1 with a remake of a Eddie Murphy movie soundtrack from the 80's. Welcome to the faking it generation.

We deserve everything we get. I just hope the comet strikes the North Pacific so I can surf my way into Hell.

It's not just the brits. The same kind of mindf*** is happening across all of the western european countries, probably due to the flash image that mobile phones are getting. Probably why all the western european countries did so poorly in Eurovision this year

Of course, we pathetic Americans can't be drawn into this ringtone craze - mostly because the mobiles available to most Americans just bite. Our leading provider, Verizon, only has TWO handsets with Bluetooth (the Moto 710 and, last week, the Treo 650). T-mobile is a bit better, and Cingular probably has the best phone selection - but they are alll way behind Europe and Asia in offering phones with MP3 ringers, BT, etc.

If you skip on over to Howard Forums, you can see how many Americans are buying imported phones off-plan, just to get a decent handset. I just bought a Moto A780 from the Hong Kong market (including a Brit AC adapter), just to get a decent smartphone. Runs Linux, perfect formfactor, fantastic screen, great PDA functions, and, yes, my ringtone is now Vivaldi's Winter Concerto...a far cry from Axel F I hope...

 I swear, since honold completely lost it, went to the darkside (split personality turning into rightwing zealot this past March); his alter ego xSTLx has become such an neo-con, well he's even slow like one ;-) ("some of you guys are mean"... hehe, you only now just figured that out? ;-); public floggings serve their purpose).

"Why does a cell phone have to do more then make phone calls?" see last item below ;-)

And no xSTLx, you've already been presented with the maximum allowable 2001:A Space Odyssey-bonehead awards, for a given time period... better luck next week; children I swear, you give them an inch, they grab for a mile, want more presents(offhand reference to an LCD thread).

'Faking it' RJ, you have some experience with that? ;). Ah well, Cameron Richardson can fake all she wants--- I don't mind a bit (now Paris...I getting that uncontrollable urge to slap her upside the head again), she still 'rides' like the best of them :P Conjures up SC singing/screaming that Aerosmith song..."I'm back!!! I'm back 'n saddle...I'm riddin" bleh, nevermind.

FS, HK is the land of 'knock-offs', true ubergeek/weenies get their techofix at places in Japan like Akiba (even if the product maybe made in mainland China). Sharon went back to HK each year during the holidays to visit with her parents while at Long Beach State U, but like me, she only had an older Sprint PCS flip phone---not a high-tech 'must-have' newest-fangled accessory BT/gimmic---but what 'accessories' she did have... yowza, black fishnet stockings! Moto will release a iTunes capable phone soon, RealPlayer/video blows. Heck that phone only supports H.263, the latest Jap (uh, I mean Japanese) phones will have codec H.264.. Hi-Def... porn, woohoo!

If Japan had a GSM quad band phone that worked everywhere, then DoCoMo phones would be interesting. But they don't - for all their tech geekiness. What good is hi-def porn when your phone only works in your native country? Would rather have RealPlayer and an aging codec that WORKS in damned near everycountry, than a proprietary Japanese standard DoCoMo phone. But that's just me - I travel a lot, so other's MMV.

Moto offers the A780 in HK, Taiwan, India, and soon Britain. But the version with EDGE high-speed data is only available from HK right now. The English vesion will add GPS, but may sacrifice quad (850/900/1800/1900) band compatibility but add G3 UTS. I need compatibility over streaming video conferencing or high-speed porn...

EDGE isn't much of a concern, since there's very little support for it, at least in Europe. By "G3 UTS" I assume you mean 3G/UMTS? Your description of Motorola's marketing seems very strange to me.
Most Nokia phones have EDGE capability, there is no variation in feature set between different countries. No phone I know of has GPS built in, but it's been optional on a variety of models. Also, there are no phones I know of that have different "versions" that support or don't support UMTS, it's always been a complete model change.
